WHICH OF THE THREE SPECIALISATIONS SUITS YOU BEST?

At the start of your Master’s in Applied Mathematics (AM), you need to choose a specialisation. This way, by personalising your programme, you get to develop your own expertise. Your choice determines part of the courses you will take and the type of research you will engage in during your master’s thesis. Whichever specialisation you choose, you will still be equipped to enter any area of applied mathematics, as the core of the programme combines courses of all specialisation fields. Additionally, you can choose courses of all specialisations in your elective space as well.

This Master’s has three specialisations:

Mathematical Systems Theory, Applied Analysis and Computational Science
The research in Applied Analysis deals with the combination of modeling, analysis and simulation of problems from the natural, life and technical sciences with applications neuroscience and medical imaging. You become an expert in developing and applying mathematical tools for physical en technical systems. Systems and control theory has roots in electrical and mechanical engineering. It has applications in, e.g. econometrics, process technology and informatics. The mathematical tools include Hilbert spaces, Bezout domains, analytical functions, probability measures, Lie groups and Petri nets. Computational Science focuses on the mathematical aspects of advanced scientific computing. The two main areas are numerical algorithms for the solution of partial differential equations and mathematical modeling of multi-scale. Multiscale Modeling and Simulation focuses on the mathematical development and application of computational models for complex physics at micro- and macro scales. The main application areas are in multi-phase flows and phase transitions, biomedical flows and tissue engineering, and self-organizing nano systems.

Mathematics of Data Science
You use modern tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyse data. You will understand the mathematical structure of those tools to make reliable decisions. There is a focus on AI for health.

You will design mathematical methods aimed at optimal decision making both deterministic as well as stochastic to improve many facets of our increasingly complex society.
