Gravitation is intended for consortia of scientists who conduct innovative and influential research within their professional discipline. The purpose is to encourage research programmes to achieve international breakthroughs. The consortia also make a substantial contribution to the training of talented researchers. 

The High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) programme challenges researchers and companies to jointly develop knowledge for technological breakthroughs and innovative applications. The HTSM-call, organised by NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES), aims to align with the mission-driven top sectors innovation policies, in particular the Nationale Technologie-strategie.

Organisations that want to invest in a research theme can enter into a Partnership with the NWO Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW) domain. Together with TTW, the organisation (or a consortium of organisations) translates the research requirement into a pertinent research question.
