Civil Engineering

Data-driven design for civil infrastructure

Are you interested in designing technology-based solutions to address society’s infrastructure challenges? Do you want to combine strong technical expertise with strategic thinking to create real-world impact?

Then the two-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Civil Engineering is the right choice for you. The programme equips you with advanced skills in systems design, technology development and data-driven engineering, including machine learning applications, data analytics and uncertainty quantification. You will work on a real-life design project in close collaboration with industry partners, while deepening your expertise through a coherent set of advanced courses.

A day in the life of an EngD Civil Engineering

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to follow the EngD Civil Engineering programme? Li gives you a glimpse into her daily life!

Why choose the EngD in Civil Engineering?

By choosing this programme, you will develop the advanced technical and analytical skills required to address today’s complex 21st-century infrastructure challenges. The programme enables you to integrate engineering expertise with systems thinking, data analytics, and emerging technologies such as machine learning to design robust, future-ready solutions. Through close collaboration with industry partners, you will gain hands-on experience while strengthening your strategic understanding of how engineering decisions translate into meaningful societal impact.

What is the programme all about?

Mass urbanisation, combined with 21st-century challenges such as ageing infrastructure, sustainability, the energy transition, and ambitious climate goals, has placed immense pressure on societies worldwide. At the same time, a shortage of skilled human capital to address these and other challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has further intensified their complexity.

This EngD programme prepares you to become a technological designer with advanced technical expertise, enabling you to develop innovative solutions grounded in a deep understanding of societal and industrial needs, as well as data-driven systems and networks.

The programme consists of three main components:

  • Mandatory courses
  • Elective courses
  • Professional development & self-regulated courses

The design project starts at the beginning of the EngD period, and your courses are aligned with the needs of the project and your own interests

How is the programme structured and what will you learn?

You follow a coherent set of core and elective courses alongside your two-year industry design project. A minimum of 48 ECTS credits in educational activities is required.

You can follow core and elective courses in areas such as infrastructure systems design, data-driven modelling, uncertainty quantification, machine learning for engineering applications, and technology development in the built environment. The exact mix is aligned with your project and interests.

Mandatory courses (post-master level and professional development, 22.5 EC)

  • Systems Design & Engineering for EngD (12 EC)
  • Technology Development and Management for Civil Engineering

Elective and self-regulated courses
Tailor your electives to your project. Examples include topics such as: Modelling and Simulation, Data Science, Machine Learning in Engineering, or a custom Capita Selecta.

What kind of candidate fits this programme?

This programme attracts ambitious MSc graduates who want to go beyond theory and apply their knowledge in societal and industrial contexts. You may have a background in civil, mechanical, and industrial engineering, computer science, or a related field. What unites our EngD candidates is a drive to design innovative, practical, technology-based solutions to complex challenges. If you are curious, communicative and eager to work in multidisciplinary teams, and you enjoy taking the initiative and taking ownership of a design project, then you are a good candidate for this programme.

The programme is also open to professionals employed by a company. Our Engineering programmes offer a streamlined enrolment route for employees with a relevant academic background who want to deepen their expertise while working. These candidates address concrete technological challenges within their organisation and apply advanced design methodologies to develop effective, implementable solutions.

What can you do after completing the EngD in Civil Engineering?

After completing this programme, you will be able to develop innovative technological solutions. You will have the tools to analyse stakeholder needs, and translate them into innovative civil engineering design prototypes, frameworks and systems. Most graduates continue their careers in industry, taking on the role of design engineer, where they guide transformation and innovation. Others may move into applied research or leadership positions in technology-driven organisations.
