If you choose to follow the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at UT with the specialisation in Aeronautics or High-Tech Systems & Materials, you have the opportunity to follow a double degree that we offer together with the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) near São Paulo, Brazil. Upon completion of this two-year programme, you will receive two Master’s degrees:
- Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (UT)
- Master of Science in Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering (ITA)
Structure
The double degree programme entails a total of two years (four semesters). You will spend two semesters at UT and two semesters in Brazil. During the first year, you will take core and elective courses within the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at UT, either from the specialisation in Aeronautics or the specialisation in High-Tech Systems & Materials.
In your second year, you will participate in courses and research at ITA. You will follow three courses out of a selection list, that fits a selected specialisation in Aerospace Engineering or Aircraft Maintenance. Aside from these three courses, you will spend eight to nine months on your master’s thesis. For this, you will have a daily supervisor at ITA as well as a co-supervisor at UT. You can start your second year in Brazil in either August or February.
Admission requirements
The number of students who can opt for the double degree programme is limited. So, in order to be selected for the programme, you need to fulfil the following requirements. You:
- have completed a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related programme;
- comply with the admission requirements of, or are admitted to the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at UT;
- are following the specialisation in Aeronautics or High-Tech Systems & Materials;
- have followed the minor Aeronautical Engineering & Management containing both:
- HTHT-minor Aerospace Management & Operations
- HTHT-minor Aircraft Engineering
- have sufficient English language skills (the programme is taught entirely in English);
- have obtained a minimum of 60 EC in the first year of the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at UT;
- basic knowledge of Portuguese is a pre.

Once you are a student of this Master’s, and specifically of the specialisation in Aeronautics or High-Tech Systems & Materials, you can apply for the double degree programme. You can send your application to the programme coordinator. Your application should include the following documents:
- A motivation letter
- Resumé (c.v.)
- An overview of the 3 courses (of 9 ITA-credits) you want to follow
- A transcript of records of the courses you have done including Grade Point Average
Deadlines
You can start your second year at ITA in Brazil in August or February. To be admitted you must have obtained a minimum of 50% of the nominal study load on the reference date of the programme.
