Double interview with Spatial Engineering students Julia Borgman and Lisa Doornbos
Why did you choose Spatial Engineering?
Julia: I have always been interested in tackling problems, especially related to social and environmental topics. What attracted me most to Spatial Engineering at ITC, was the focus on current challenges, such as flooding and food and water security. The breadth of the programme and the ability to focus and work towards your own interests make it interesting and fun. Before Spatial Engineering, I studied a bachelor's in Creative Technology at the University of Twente. To get more familiar with GIS data, I followed the HTHT minors Earth Observation and Geographic Information Systems at ITC. Within Spatial Engineering, you’re able to choose topics based on your interest, therefore I was able to broaden my knowledge in new directions.
Lisa: After my bachelor’s in Wageningen, which was focused on understanding and designing landscapes, I wanted to develop a better understanding of the current spatial problems that have an impact on our surroundings. I did not know of ITC before I found out about the Master’s in Spatial Engineering, and was fascinated by the multidisciplinary approach that the programme offers. Other than that, I wanted to develop my skills with all kinds of spatial analysis tools and get acquainted with different programmes, such as ArcGIS.
What do you like most about the programme?
Lisa: The programme is culturally diverse, not just the students but also the different projects we worked on in the first year. There is also an opportunity to further develop any knowledge or skills within the so-called choice topics and the electives in year one.
Julia: Yes, I agree with that. I acquired and improved many different skill sets, related to technical, social, as well as academic topics. By directly applying the new knowledge gained from courses into project work, it’s easier to understand the relevance and practice the application. Learning how to work in an international and interdisciplinary team was one thing I really enjoyed and I would love to utilize in my future career.
To who would you recommend the Master’s Spatial Engineering?
Lisa: I would recommend the programme to anyone who has an affinity for problem-solving, teamwork, spatial issues with social implications, and the use of geoinformation systems (GIS). Of course, these are highly various topics, but I think that also really fits the master. In the different courses, you get the opportunity to develop your own interests and skills. In the final stages, when you work on your master’s thesis and internship, you develop this even further. Anyone who is interested in combining spatial analysis with the development of interventions, while considering many stakeholders’ interests, should consider this programme.
