Sustainable Oceans Lectures 6/6: Frits Bliek Large scale renewable energy production offshore

THIS TALK IS PART OF A SERIES OF LECTURES FROM AN INTERNATIONAL GROUP OF EXPERTS FROM INDUSTRY AND RESEARCH ON SUSTAINABLE OCEANS. THESE EXPERTS ARE SUPPORTING OUR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS IN THE EXPLORATION OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN MARINE BIOTECHNOLOGY, MARITIME TRANSPORTATION AND OCEAN-RENEWABLE ENERGIES.  Frits Bliek is the last guest lecturer for now. He is going to talk about offshore energy production.

Frits is an Innovator in the Energy Industry and is leading ‘Ocean Grazer’ a startup that develops Energy Storage Solutions for Offshore Wind farms and other renewable energy sources like wave energy conversion and floating solar.  He will introduce the UCT community to his company and work: One of the crucial arguments to harvest renewable energy offshore rather than onshore is the scarcity of space in densely populated regions like the EU. We all want renewable energy, but Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY). At sea however the situation is not much better, especially at the North Sea that is intensively used by shipping, fishing, etc. Questions remain on how we ensure that we meet our climate goals in time and prevent a lockup between the stakeholders of the space offshore.

This guest lecture is not only open for our students, but also for other interested people. You can sign up via the button below.
