'Studying in the Netherlands is an amazing experience'

“After some research, I realised that the higher education system in the Netherlands works for me. The university provides students with a lot, there is a great student life, the campus is beautiful and I like the model-based system. I chose for the bachelor’s programme Electrical Engineering because of my passion for technology and electronics. Almost everything we interact with in daily life has a connection to electrical engineering. Because this is a small-scale programme, you have lots of opportunities to create a good relationship with teachers.

This is a fun programme and having diploma in Electrical Engineering opens a lot of doors to a variety of domains.

Project-based education
The programme is project-based. For engineers, it is vital to understand the theory and its applications. Practical work – either in projects or labs - helps you to get a better understanding of the theory. During the projects, which are society-based, you apply what you have learned in a module. You learn how to research and solve a real-life problem with fellow students. I worked on a project about a sports package sensor that includes sensors to measure heartbeats, the number of steps and the temperature. One of my favourite projects was about power inverters. This project was extremely fun, we worked in teams to find a solution to transfer the power produced by a solar panel to store it in the grid. It is important to be able to have the minimum power loss possible. Another project was also extremely interesting as it involved control theory. This is also a topic that is widely used as most systems have some level of control. The project was about balancing a segway and being able to move it with a console, this involved a lot of simulations and modelling.

Sports in addition to studies
This programme is quite demanding, therefore it is important to relax. At the beginning of my programme, I decided to stop with basketball. But after talking to my bachelor coordinator and module mentor, who both told me that activities outside the programme were important, I started playing this year with the Jolly Jumpers in Tubbergen. We even made it to the playoffs! It is hard to combine studies and sports at this level, because of multiple trainings and games a week and it is physically hard sometimes, but worth it. The university provides good support for high-level athletes (also for artists). The top-level programme gives me the possibility to make my programme a bit more flexible. The study advisors help me organise my studies.

I enjoy being an Electrical Engineer bachelor at UT and the student life it brings. I think that it is a nice experience for whoever decides to join it. It is a fun programme and the faculty has a lot to offer to students, in quality and support and a diploma in Electrical Engineering opens a lot of doors to a lot of different domains.”
