Tosti Talks: Don’t believe the innovation hype!

During this talk

Today’s world is very complex and we call for "innovation". The idea that we have of innovation though comes from philosophy and practices that are neither sustainable nor responsible. Technology is often pushed onto problems as if is the only possible answer. But is it? Only 10 years ago Facebook was revered as life-changing tech, now the same very platform is feared as a form of surveillance capitalism. We definitely went behind the hacker culture that brought tech to the masses. The problems we face often are not easy to tackle. The technology developed to solve problems, or bring innovation, sometimes opens more issues than it solves. What can we do as a student and scientists? How can we still make an impact without falling for the innovation hype?

We need to collaborate beyond disciplines. How can we work together then?

In this talk, our speaker Cristina Zaga is going to present how DesignLab is trying to bring scientists and people together to design the society of the future. She is going to introduce the methods that are developed at DesignLab and discuss it at large with the audience through the lenses of everyday life examples: the Facebook case, the Climate change case and the Immigration case. Don’t believe the innovation hype, act for a responsible future!

THE SPEAKER

  • Cristina Zaga

Cristina is a researcher and lecturer at the Human-Centred Design Group (Design and Production Management department) and at DesignLab, part of the University of Twente.

At the Human-Centred Design group, she contributes to teaching and research, specifically focusing design methods for embodied AI and interactive agency.

Cristina’s interests lay in the interaction design and related methodologies for technological products and systems that aim at social good, especially physically embodied AI-driven systems (e.g., robots, IoTs).

At DesignLab, she investigates methodologies, methods, tools, and techniques to connect science, technology, and society through responsible design. Previously, Cristina has worked at the Human-Media Interaction Group (University of Twente) and the Robots in Groups Lab (Cornell University, USA) on her doctoral research about “robothings”, everyday robotic objects and toys, to promote children’s prosocial behaviors in collaborative play.  Her award-winning work in Human-Robot Interaction has received many accolades.

She is regularly invited as a speaker at events (e.g., TEDx), symposia, and conferences. Cristina is very much involved in the organization of the Conference on Human Factors in Computing (CHI) and she served in many SICHI conference organization committees. Cristina is an advocate of inclusion and diversity in science. She was selected as Google Women TechMaker Scholar 2018 for her research quality and her support to empower women and children in STEM.
