🎉 On Thursday 2 October, Citizen Science Netherlands (a project of DesignLab together with Leiden University), Waag Futurelab, and the Association of Lecturers will host the very first National Citizen Science Expo: Kennis Maken – the event for anyone involved in citizen science! Are you working on citizen science and eager to share your knowledge, results, challenges, or experiences? This is your chance: submit your activity and take part in the expo!
Citizen science is gaining momentum across the Netherlands: more and more people are measuring, researching, and discovering together – whether it's in their own garden, in the neighbourhood, or through a network of sensors spread across the country. From curious local residents to engaged scientists: the power of collaborative research is growing.
With all this energy and these initiatives, new questions arise, such as: Where does citizen science really make a difference – in the research question, data collection, analysis, or its impact on policy? How do we ensure reliable, accessible data that is used ethically and responsibly? And how do we guarantee equal collaboration among all those involved? In short: what is the state of citizen science in the Netherlands?
At the first edition of Kennis Maken: National Citizen Science Expo on Thursday 2 October 2025, we aim to answer these questions through a wide-ranging programme, and you can be a part of it!
Want to participate?
Share your latest insights, present your project, or reflect on challenges. From mini-exhibitions and sensor-building workshops to panel discussions and interactive sessions. It’s all possible at the Citizen Science Expo. Together, we will help citizen science continue to grow.
Would you like to contribute to the programme? Submit your activity before Monday 9 June 2025 via https://citizenscienceexpo.nl/organiseer-een-activiteit. The programme will be announced in July.
