This February and March, you are invited to write a love letter to yourself: Live at DesignLab or online. Share your personal motivations, concerns and wishes regarding the future of digitalisation, health and climate action. Already in the first week, over 20 meters of letters have been written, drawn or made using collages. During events by our DesignLab and UT community of kids, students and PhDs and of course our day-to-day visitors and followers. We could not wait to share these inspiring stories with you, so here is a selection! Will you add yours, too? On the 30th of November, amidst a serene snowy backdrop, the DesignLab hosted the concluding event of the Urban Green Infrastructure walkshop series organized by the UT Climate Centre. This initiative aimed to delve into our relationship with infrastructure and the environment, sparking imaginative reinterpretations of human-managed landscapes. Led by Assistant Professors Corelia Baibarac-Duignon and Dr. Alexandria Poole, the walkshop sought to explore the role of urban green infrastructure in addressing climate change through participatory experiences. In collaboration with the RUrban Futures Collective at BMS, the focus of the final walkshop was on reconnecting culture and ecology within 'RUrban' (rural-urban) landscapes.2023-12-26T07:42:00+00:00Countdown to 2024

Almost 10 years ago, DesignLab University of Twente was founded with the mission to make true responsible impact by bridging the gap between science and our society: students and researchers who join forces with the industry, government and citizens for societal challenges that seem to become more complex. We built upon the ecosystem that embraces innovation using new technologies, design research. We enabled collaboration based on learning with and from each other.2023-12-22T07:59:40+00:00Event Recap: METAORGANISM

During a full day at DesignLab; around 70 people from all over Europe and the Americas - Canada and Brazil - dove into the challenge of grounding Citizen Science in Research Institutions across Europe. We had a packed day with keynote speeches, parallel sessions, and networking opportunities. The day was kicked off by a keynote by Dr Uta Wehn who raised the question “Do research institutions need CS?”, arguing that in fact, Citizen Science is the only way to achieve all the SDGs. While Open Science opens the door of academia to the world, Citizen Science invites the world in to experience science. A major challenge then - exactly the focus on the reads of the day - is how to embed CS then including the question how Research Institutions can create and navigate their Enabling Environment.2023-11-17T09:06:21+00:00Dutch Design Week in full swing

The new academic year is already in full swing. And after last week's official kickoff, you might be wondering: where's the programme for UT’s third edition of Diversity Week? Not a crazy thought at all. This year, we've decided to channel all our energy into Diversity Day on Tuesday 3 October 2023. On that day, we'll dedicate extra attention to the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social safety in everything we do. But one day – or even a week like the past two years, emphasising these vital values at a single point in the year – isn't nearly enough. That's why, for instance in the course of 2024, we'll focus on DE&I and social safety again during our very first symposium. It's all about continuously inspiring us all to look beyond labels or boxes: how can we make diversity, equity, and inclusion our second nature? And what does that mean in practice for you, your fellow students, or your colleagues?2023-09-13T14:48:11+00:00Congratulations to citizens and researchers for establishing new projects together

This spring, a call was made for citizens and researchers to submit their collaborative research ideas for the start of the new program “Civic and Citizen Science”. The goal of this program is to strengthen citizen participation in scientific research and to increase the role of science in regional challenges. After the call, five ideas were selected, each receiving a maximum of €10,000 to work on the idea for the next two years. 2023-09-12T08:59:06+00:00Klaasjan Visscher appointed as full professor

https://www.utwente.nl/en/designlab/news/2023/6/1027955/reflection-on-the-sustainability-dialogues-turning-ideas-into-action
We launched the Sustainability Dialogues with the UT community in February with great drive and determination. It suits the diversity and urgency of the climate change issue, and also the value the UT community gives to contributing to solutions. Now that we have had the final in-depth session, we pause to take stock, look back at the Dialogue’s outcomes, and look ahead to how it will help us accelerate our sustainability transition, knowing that science, technology and innovation – in concert with the social sciences and humanities - will be important factors in addressing climate change and its impact. It is our contribution to the systemic change needed to address the climate crisis.2023-06-28T13:22:46+00:00UT Challenge 2023: the winners

Over 400 people have received and played the card game 'Connecting worlds for a better future', which is a follow-up of the eponymous narrative about UT, presented at the Dutch Design Week 2022. The card game serves as a warm up for the principles of Responsible Futuring. When playing the game, users write a future story, reflect on the outcomes and define who they would need in order to realise their defined future. A selection of stories is available in our 'User Stories' repository, a booklet and in the form of audio. The illustrations that tell the stories visually can also be experienced live at DesignLab, as part of the DesignLab museum.2023-05-27T09:16:53+00:00Unique study on AI among children in the Netherlands
https://www.utwente.nl/en/designlab/news/2023/5/957020/unique-study-on-ai-among-children-in-the-netherlands
Relational skills of children are unique sources of inspiration for the development of human-centred Artificial or Artificial Intelligence (AI). But children are still too little involved in the public dialogue on AI systems. DesignLab and children's rights organisation KidsRights in Amsterdam conducted unique research in the Netherlands that they focused entirely on children and young people. The aim of the research is to collect ethical and social values, both about children's current interactions with AI systems and their outlook on the future. In doing so, DesignLab and KidsRights aim to contribute to promoting broad and meaningful participation of children.2023-05-22T07:00:00+00:00Students creating solutions for tomorrow
