The coming twenty years, the city of Meppel will develop a unique residential area with 3.400 houses, named Nieuwveense Landen. One of the main principles in developing this district is, that the energy supply to the houses will lead to maximum comfort, minimal environmental burdening, and against lowest costs.
In order to achieve this, Meppel and RENDO have founded an energy operating company named “MeppelEnergie”. On basis of several studies has been concluded that a system with hybrid energy supply through biogas is the most efficient. With this system a biogas-WKK is used to produce electricity and heat. This heat is used to supply part of the houses through a thermal network with heating and hot water. The electricity is used to supply through heat pumps heat and cold to another part of the houses. With residual heat from clarified sewage the heat balance in the soil is maintained.
In the first phase of 444 houses a Smart Grid will be demonstrated, to make this heat supply as efficient as possible. By way of monitoring, participation and gaming a survey will be made how inhabitants can be incited to save energy.
