Data science and artificial intelligence

Digitalisation of society provides a treasure trove of data, based on an abundance of sensors and the endless possibilities for people to connect via websites and social media. Data science and artificial intelligence offer many possibilities to interpret data properly, learn from it and use it to achieve specific goals and tasks. In this way, new, smart services can be developed that offer solutions to current social challenges in a large variety of domains including intelligent digital personal assistants in smartphones, health, engineering, safety and security, business and science.

However, this development comes with challenges. Of course, better solutions in the field of data science and artificial intelligence need to be developed for various applications. On the one hand, this calls for an application-oriented approach and, on the other hand, for a fundamental understanding of the basic principles embedded in computer science, mathematics and image and signal profiling. At the same time, concepts such as fairness, privacy, and trust, as well as threats such as fake news must be addressed. This requires a fundamental interdisciplinary approach connecting the social and technical sciences. Moreover, as the sources of data become more dispersed and heterogenous, we see a strong trend toward moving data analyses close to those sources, leading to a stronger integration of artificial intelligence solutions and hardware at the edge of the network, as well as much more demand for resource-efficient solutions. 

Various groups at the University of Twente conduct research on data science and artificial Intelligence, including work on fundamental understanding of machine learning, sensors, efficient realisation of artificial intelligence in hardware, to development and application of artificial intelligence in fields such as health, safety and security, the geo-spatial domain, and manufacturing, to name a few. Central unifying themes are embedded and augmented intelligence.

Aneurysm reputre

Aneurysm rupture in the abdominal aorta is typically lethal. Based on current clinical guidelines, patients with an aneurysm wider than 5.5 cm are considered for elective repair. Such an elective procedure  using open surgery or endovascular repair may avert rupture, but this treatment is not without risks and may in some cases be unnecessary.

Realtime drones

The faculty of ITC of the university of twente is investigating the use of drones for the police. This involves the use of a drone to view information in real time. This makes it possible to use this data in the event of a collision, for example. The data makes it possible to see how many vehicles are involved and what the position of the cars involved is.

Monika Kuffer is developing a machine-learning based framework to map the disadvantaged neighbourhoods in developing countries. In global south cities, population statistics about poor neighbourhoods are often unavailable or ignore large proportions of poor inhabitants.

In the BRAINS centre of the University of Twente researchers are working on a new generation of powerful, energy-efficient electronics inspired by the brain. Leading experts from many fields, including nanotechnology, computer science, artificial intelligence and neuroscience work together to develop hardware for Artificial Intelligence.

The overall challenge in PrimaVera is to realize the grand promises in predictive maintenance. Through an effective combination of sensor techniques, big data analysis, maintenance engineering, we want to predict failures better, so that maintenance can be more effective. PrimaVera is a multi-disciplinary project funded by the prestigious Dutch National Research agenda.

Data2Game project

The Data2Game project investigates how, and to what extent, the efficacy of computerised training games can be enhanced by tailoring the training scenarios to the individual player. The research is performed in close collaboration with serious-game developers at Thales/T-Xchange and with Veiligheidsregio Twente for the purpose of enhancing the training efficacy of members of a crisis management team.
