Smart Signs Solutions, a young spin-off of the University of Twente (CTIT), has won the Accenture Innovation Award in the category Best Connected Device Concept.
Smart Signs is a young spin-off of the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology of the University of Twente.
Dr. Maria Eva Lijding started the company in November 2008 to bring the results of her research within the Smart Surroundings project to the market. At present 8 people work for Smart Signs, 4 in the Netherlands and 4 in Paraguay. Since 2010 Smart Signs is present in hospitals in the Netherlands: in the Emma children hospital of the Academic Hospital in Amsterdam (AMC) and the prestigious Alzheimer centre of the VUMC in Amsterdam. Here is a short video of the opening of the Alzheimer centre by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix on September 28th 2010.
Smart Signs Solutions brings navigation into large buildings like hospitals, airports, offices, shopping malls and university buildings, where it stops at the entrance. Their solutions guide visitors to the right place by means of digital signs and smart phones, in a personalized and effective way. Cutting edge is the intelligence to adapt to the dynamics of the building (e.g. broken elevator or department closed) and capabilities of the visitors (e.g. mobility and language). Visiting a building will be more pleasant.
Organizations will be able to improve processes, maximize asset capitalization and to reduce costs.
