16 Jan 2015 - ICT Call 2015 / Industrial Leadership The next ICT Call 2015 / Industrial Leadership (Horizon 2020) is open. Deadline is April 14, 2015. 8 Jan 2015 - New NWO KIEM project for the Pervasive Systems group The Pervasive Systems group has acquired a NWO/KIEM subsidy for their project "Count yourself safe". 8 Jan 2015 - ERA-NET Cofund Smart Cities and Communities European cities are facing complex and widespread problems. Grand challenges such as demographic transformations, resource depletion and climate change, unequal social participation, congested transport networks, and difficult trade-offs in land use decisions can only be turned into opportunities if appropriate policy strategies are applied. Such policy actions need to be supported by dedicated co-ordination of Research and Innovation on the challenges and opportunities of urban environments in Europe. The ERA-NET COFUND Smart Cities and Communities (ENSCC) was established by the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe (JPI UE1) and the Smart Cities Member States Initiative (SC MSI2 ) in order to initiate a transnational joint call for RDI proposals addressing new solutions in the urban field, and demonstrating the feasibility of their implementation. These solutions should aim at optimal energy and resource efficiency, preferably through the integration of technologies (energy, mobility, ICT) across the board, but also via the development and use of new business models and new methodologies in urban governance, and in explicitly aiming towards social cohesion, liveability, and sustainability. 5 Jan 2015 - New Year's Breakfast theme is visibility On Monday the very popular New Year's Breakfast was held at the UT. The maximum amount of registrations of 700 staff and students had already been reached several weeks before the event. The UT in the Media Awards were presented at the meeting, for students and researchers who had best succeeded in exposing their research to a broader audience through the media. As per tradition the meeting ended with a cabaret performance. Caberet performer Thijs Kemperink from Twente had been invited to hold a mirror up to the audience. "As we have to take our job seriously, but ourselves a little less sometimes." 18 Dec 2014 - UT successful in European ICT projects Six University of Twente proposals, totalling  over 2.5 million euros, have been approved in the latest round of Horizon 2020 research projects of the European Commission, in the field of ICT. For this, the University of Twente is collaborating with research institutes, government bodies and businesses throughout Europe. 10 Dec 2014 - Healthcare needs to invest in online rehabilitation Online rehabilitation takes many forms. A vest with electrodes that monitor muscle activity can help treat neck and shoulder problems. Online exercise videos supply a home-based rehabilitation solution for patients with back pain. In her research, Stephanie Jansen-Kosterink has found that telemedicine – the online provision of healthcare – not only provides a positive boost for care but also a solution to the growing demand for and rising cost of care. Stephanie defended her dissertation at the University of Twente on 10 December.  8 Dec 2014 - Hanna Jochmann-Mannak wins Victorine van Schaick Award Hanna Jochmann-Mannak (CTIT-EEMCS/HMI), who graduated in January 2014, recently has received the Victorine van Schaick Award 2014 for her PhD thesis Websites for children: Search strategies and interface design. Currently, she works as child-computer interaction expert at WizeNoze B.V. In her thesis, she concluded that children hardly prefer game elements at websites. 3 Dec 2014 - Two CTIT research projects awarded as Top Research at NWO The Dutch Organisation for Scientific research, NWO, has awarded two CTIT research projects (faculty EEMCS). Both projects, Verification of Distributed Software, by Marieke Huisman (FMT-group) and Framework for Random Metric Spaces by Bodo Manthey (DMMP-group) received a Top compartment 2 subsidy (for junior researchers). In total the subsidy amounts to 440.000 euro (more information in Dutch).
