21 Jan 2015 - Arnoud den Boer awarded Gijs de Leve Prize Arnoud den Boer, of the Stochastic Operations Research department, has been awarded the Gijs de Leve Prize at the annual congress of the LNMB, the Dutch Network on the Mathematics of Operations Research. In awarding den Boer this prestigious prize, the jury recognized his doctoral thesis as the best PhD thesis in operations research defended in the last three years. 19 Jan 2015 - Shaping the Future of Digital Social Innovation in Europe, Workshop EU, 17 February 2015 17 February, 2015: The workshop "Shaping the Future of Digital Social Innovation in Europe" will be organized by the European Commission.  19 Jan 2015 - Call for STW Take-off Feasibility Studies is expected to be opened by February 1, 2015 Technology Foundation STW will shortly be inviting applications for its Take-off feasibility studies grants (former Valorisation Grants). It is expected that the next call will open on 1 February and will close on 1 March 2015 (information in Dutch). 16 Jan 2015 - STW-IWT bilateral OTP-projects (Dutch-Flemish Research Collaboration, a.o. HTSM/ICT) To stimulate bilateral cooperation between Flemish and Dutch researchers, STW and IWT have started a pilot for bilateral projects. Goal is (at the long term) to give researchers the possibility to submit cooperative project proposals to both organisations. Currently, the programme is paid under the OTP projects (at STW). Deadline is April 30, 2015 (information in Dutch). 16 Jan 2015 - ICT Call 2015 / Industrial Leadership The next ICT Call 2015 / Industrial Leadership (Horizon 2020) is open. Deadline is April 14, 2015. 8 Jan 2015 - New NWO KIEM project for the Pervasive Systems group The Pervasive Systems group has acquired a NWO/KIEM subsidy for their project "Count yourself safe". 8 Jan 2015 - ERA-NET Cofund Smart Cities and Communities European cities are facing complex and widespread problems. Grand challenges such as demographic transformations, resource depletion and climate change, unequal social participation, congested transport networks, and difficult trade-offs in land use decisions can only be turned into opportunities if appropriate policy strategies are applied. Such policy actions need to be supported by dedicated co-ordination of Research and Innovation on the challenges and opportunities of urban environments in Europe. The ERA-NET COFUND Smart Cities and Communities (ENSCC) was established by the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe (JPI UE1) and the Smart Cities Member States Initiative (SC MSI2 ) in order to initiate a transnational joint call for RDI proposals addressing new solutions in the urban field, and demonstrating the feasibility of their implementation. These solutions should aim at optimal energy and resource efficiency, preferably through the integration of technologies (energy, mobility, ICT) across the board, but also via the development and use of new business models and new methodologies in urban governance, and in explicitly aiming towards social cohesion, liveability, and sustainability. 5 Jan 2015 - New Year's Breakfast theme is visibility On Monday the very popular New Year's Breakfast was held at the UT. The maximum amount of registrations of 700 staff and students had already been reached several weeks before the event. The UT in the Media Awards were presented at the meeting, for students and researchers who had best succeeded in exposing their research to a broader audience through the media. As per tradition the meeting ended with a cabaret performance. Caberet performer Thijs Kemperink from Twente had been invited to hold a mirror up to the audience. "As we have to take our job seriously, but ourselves a little less sometimes."
