How much tuition fee do you annually pay for a study programme at UT?

When studying at a university, you need to pay a tuition fee. Two types of tuition fees exist: statutory tuition fees and institutional fees. Find out how much tuition fee you have to pay.

If you start in February, your first academic year will run from February to August. When you join in February, you will initially pay an amount for the period from 1 February to 31 August, so 7 months in total. The amounts mentioned for the February intake are therefore 7/12 of the annual amount. Then, from September onwards, you pay again for an entire academic year, or the rates for the September intake of the following year.

How can I pay my tuition fees?

First-year students requiring a visa/residence permit cannot pay the tuition fees by digital authorisation or in instalments. They need to pay their tuition fee for a whole year in one single payment by bank transfer before we can submit their application to the IND.

At Studielink you can indicate how you want to pay your tuition fee. The payment methods are described in their step-by-step guides. There are 4 possibilities for paying your tuition fees.

1. Payment via (digital) authorisation in 5 instalments

Payment by authorisation in 5 instalments is only possible for everyone with a European IBAN connected to SEPA.

The first instalment will be raised by €24 in administration costs. When you start in February with your master's programme, you can only pay in two instalments instead of five instalments. Payment in instalments is not possible for pre-master's applications.

2. Payment via (digital) authorisation in 1 instalment

The total amount will be withdrawn around 30 September (for the September intake) or around 31 March (for the February intake).

In Studielink it is possible to arrange the payment by authorisation of your tuition fee. To be able to use the digital authorisation you need to have a European IBAN connected to SEPA. If someone else signs for the authorisation, this person must have a European IBAN connected to SEPA and DigiD.

If you meet the requirements for paying your tuition fees by authorisation but are unable to use the digital authorisation in Studielink, contact Student Services. Please do not forget to mention your student number.

3. Single transfer: transferring the full fee manually by a single transfer

In Studielink you can choose a payment method by ‘Other Method of Payment’. If you have chosen a single transfer you have to transfer the complete amount at once to the University of Twente, stating your name, date of birth and student number. The complete amount has to be transferred to the bank account below. Please take a processing time of two weeks into account. In case of an international transfer, you need to mention the BIC-code: ABNANL2A.

4. Exemption through certification tuition fees paid (BBC, Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld)

If you are already enrolled as a student at another Dutch university or institute of higher vocational education, you can get, under certain conditions, an exemption or reduction of tuition fees at the University of Twente. If your other educational institution supports this, Certification Tuition Fees Paid can be arranged digitally in Studielink. If your other educational institution does not support this in Studielink, you need to request an original proof of tuition fee (Certification Tuition Fees Paid) payment at the institute where you have paid the fees. Please include the original certificate when sending your (re-)enrolment form to Student Services.

Change payment details

Have you specified a payment option, but want to change it, or do you want to change your bank account number? Then you can arrange that in Studielink. Or you can fill in the form Change of payment (see below) and submit it to Student Services.

Refunds

Tuition fee refund for cancelled applications

If you have already paid the tuition fee, but decide not to study at the University of Twente, you are entitled to a full refund of the tuition fee. To receive the refund, your cancellation must be submitted through Studielink no later than 31 August. Please note that the €100 application fee is non-refundable, as the admission process has already started. The visa fee can only be refunded if we have not yet submitted the visa application.

Can I get a refund of the application fee?

The application fee is applicable to students with an international prior education, who want to follow a bachelor programme (all faculties) or a master programme with the faculty EEMCS and/or ET. The application fee is non-refundable when you first apply from the September 2023 intake onwards.

Have you applied for an earlier intake for a programme that you will now start, please contact Student Services.

Restitution of tuition fees after de-enrolment

Have you obtained a diploma (with a certificate)?
Are you (temporarily) quitting your studies?

Then you need to submit a de-enrolment request via Studielink. You need to make this request in the month that you will quit your studies, at the latest at 31 May. De-enrolment requests that are submitted at a later moment cannot be processed, so make sure to be on time!

You will receive a restitution of 1/12^th of the paid tuition fee for each month that you finished your programme earlier than the end of the academic year. When you stop in June, July or August, restitution is no longer possible.

When you are eligible for restitution, the amount will be refunded automatically. Please note that it may take a couple of days before the money actually reaches your account.

EXAMPLES RESTITUTION TUITION FEES

When you de-enrol on 1 November, you will receive 10/12 of your tuition fee.
When you de-enrol in May per 1 June, you will receive 3/12 of your tuition fee.
When you de-enrol on 1 July, you will not receive a restitution.

If you submit your de-enrolment requests in the collection months (September, November, January, March, and May) before the 15^th of the month, we can process this request in time so that no (full) instalment will be collected. If you de-enrol after the 15^th, a full instalment will be collected and you will be eligible for a refund.

What kind of tuition fees do I need to pay?

STATUTORY TUITION FEES

You pay the statutory tuition fees if you meet the following three conditions:

You are enrolling or are already enrolled in a program at a university of applied sciences (HBO) or university.
You have Dutch nationality, the nationality of another EU/EEA country (1), Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, or Suriname, or you have a specific Dutch residence permit that qualifies.
At the start of the academic year, you have not yet obtained a comparable degree. So, if you are enrolling for a bachelor's degree, you must not already hold a bachelor's degree.

Exceptions are made for certain categories. You will never pay more than the statutory tuition fee rate if you meet the first two conditions for the statutory rate and:

You have already obtained a (bachelor's or master's) degree, but are enrolling for the first time in a programme in the healthcare field (2) and have not previously followed a healthcare-related (2) or teacher training programme (3).
You have already obtained one or more (bachelor's or master's) degrees but are following a teacher training programme (3). When following a teacher training programme, you are always entitled to the institutional rate equivalent to the statutory rate.
You started your second degree programme while still enrolled in your first program and have continued it uninterrupted, even after obtaining a degree for the first programme.

INSTITUTIONAL TUITION FEES

If you do not meet the conditions for the statutory tuition fees, you will need to pay institutional tuition fees.

Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, the Czech Republic, or Sweden.
For the University of Twente, these are the Bachelor's programs in Health Sciences and Clinical Technology (Technical Medicine).
The University of Twente does not offer teacher training programs at the Bachelor's level.

What do I have to pay for a pre-master's?

Tuition fees for Pre-master's students

There is no fixed tuition fee for a pre-master's programme at UT, since the length and study load of a pre-master's may vary per student. Programmes can vary from 15 to 60 EC. To follow a pre-master's you have to pay an amount per EC. The total amount is based on the number of ECs from your pre-master's.

The amount per EC is € 43.35 for the academic year 2025-2026.
The amount per EC is € 44.90 for the academic year 2026-2027.

Conditions

This regulation applies to all students who only have a pre-master’s enrolment, regardless of nationality. You pay a single, upfront fee for your entire pre-master’s programme. You can choose between two payment methods:

A bank transfer
A one-time direct debit authorisation

No right to a refund for pre-master’s programmes

The pre-master’s fee is based on the number of ECTS credits (hereinafter referred to as EC) that your programme comprises, not on the number of months you need to complete your pre-master’s programme. As a result, refunds differ from those for regular programmes. You are not entitled to a refund of the pre-master’s fee if you drop out, unless:

you submitted a request for de-enrolment via Studielink within the first three months of your pre-master’s programme. In that case, you pay 5 EC per month, up to a maximum of the number of ECs in your programme. Two examples:
- You start a 30 EC pre-master’s programme on 1 September and submit a request for de-enrolment via Studielink on 31 October. You have been working on your pre-master’s for two months. You will have to pay 10 EC (2 months at 5 EC) and will be refunded the fee you paid for the remaining 20 EC.
- You start a 13 EC pre-master’s programme on 1 September and submit a request for de-enrolment on 30 November. You have been working on your pre-master’s programme for three months. In principle, you would have to pay for 15 EC, but your programme was less than 15 EC. You will not receive a refund.
You have to stop due to personal circumstances. In that case, part of the fee may be refunded. Please, contact your student counsellor and submit a request for deregistration via Studielink.

Two examples (2026-2027)

Your pre-master's is 30 EC: you will pay € 44.90 x 30 EC = € 1.347
Your pre-master's is 45 EC: you will pay € 44.90 x 45 EC = € 2.020,50

European Credit Transfer System

Student workload at Dutch universities is expressed in EC, also named ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which is widely used throughout the European Union. In the Netherlands, each credit represents 28 hours of work.

Pre-master's as a transfer minor

In some cases, you can choose to follow (part of) the pre-master's during your current bachelor's, as a transfer minor. In that case, you can avoid (part of the) extra costs; you already pay tuition fees for your current bachelor's. Find out more about this option for Dutch HBO- and WO-students.

When am I eligible for a halving of tuition fees?

How much do I pay if I want to pursue a second Bachelor's or Master's degree?

Bachelor

If you have already obtained a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral degree or an engineering degree in the Netherlands, you will pay the institutional fee for the second bachelor's degree. There is an exception to the above rule: if you start a second study at the same time as your first study.

The law makes an exception to this rule for students who started another study before completing a first study and who follow this study uninterruptedly. You therefore start a second study at the same time as your first study. If you are going to follow a second study that started during a first study, you are exempt from tuition fees for your second study during your registration for the first study. After deregistration from your first study, you will pay the statutory tuition fees for your second (uninterrupted) study if you also meet the applicable requirements.

Master

The statutory rate only applies to a first Master's programme. You must also meet the applicable requirements for the statutory rate. If you have already obtained a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree, a doctoral degree or an engineering degree in the Netherlands, you will pay the institutional rate for the second Master's programme. There are two exceptions to the above rule:

Starting a second study during your first study

The law makes an exception to this rule for students who started another study programme before completing their first programme and who continue to follow it uninterruptedly. You therefore start a second study programme at the same time as your first study programme. If you continue to follow a second study programme that was started during your first study programme, you are exempt from paying tuition fees for your second study programme during your registration for the first study programme. After deregistration from your first study programme, you will pay the statutory tuition fees for your second (uninterrupted) study programme if you also meet the applicable requirements.

Second master's degree at the UT at an institutional rate equal to the statutory rate

UT students eligible for the statutory rate for their first master's degree will pay an institutional rate equal to the statutory rate for their second master's degree. The conditions for taking a second master's degree at the University of Twente for an institutional rate equal to the statutory rate are as follows:

The scheme applies exclusively to second master's degrees;
The scheme applies exclusively to students who completed their first master's degree no more than 3 academic years ago;
The scheme applies to successive studies in funded education, which means consecutive or with an intermediate period (i.e. not parallel);
The scheme applies exclusively to students who were eligible for the statutory rate for their first master's degree (in general, these are EEA students and non-EEA students who were already entitled to the statutory rate);
The scheme applies exclusively to students who also followed and completed their first master's degree at UT;
An exception to the rule is following an additional teacher training course within UT.

I'm extraneus. What do I pay?

When you register as an Extraneus, you have the right to take tests and exams. You are not entitled to attend lectures, receive guidance and use student facilities. You are also not entitled to student finance or a refund of the exam fee paid.
