3 TU.Federation signs a cooperation agreement with STW

3TU-STW

On Friday 22 June, 2007 the Technology Foundation STW signed a cooperation agreement on valorisation with the the 3 technical universities in the Netherlands, joined in the 3TU.Federation. The aim is to accelerate and multiply research results into innovative applications, through joined valorisation teams, making and executing exploitation plans per specific research case. For more information (in Dutch) see STW website.

Information on research funding programmes

Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union:

FP7/ICT Programme:

The Second Call has recently been published. The budget is 477 M-€. This Call addresses activities 3.1, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7. Deadline is October 9, 2007, 17.00 hrs. Please take a look at our FP7 information site for more information.

Future and Emerging Technologies

FET Information site

FET Open Call: call information, more information.

FIRE (FIRE Future Internet Research and Experimentation) Initiative

In June 2007, as part of the 2nd ICT Call, the FIRE programme has been launched, with a budget of 40 M-€: The planning is 36 M-€ for Cooperative Projects (IPs and STREPs), 3 M-€ for Networks of Excellence and 1 M-€ for Support Actions.

FIRE addresses long-term research which will investigate new architectures and approaches to build the foundations for the future Internet, embedding radically new paradigms, and getting rid of the accumulated shortcomings caused by the 'patches' used in the current Internet, so to make the internet more efficient in supporting society, economy and ultimately the innovation process.

Critical Infrastructure Protection

In August 2007 a Joint Call between ICT and Security themes is to be expected on “Critical Infrastructure Protection”.

JTI’s

Europea Commision accepted and published two proposals for the first Joint Technology Initiatives, one being within the area of ICT: ARTEMIS (Advanced Research and Technology for Embedded Intelligence and Systems; research budget: 2,7 biljon euro for 7 years).

OTHER FP7 PROGRAMMES:

Ideas/ERC:

The first Call has been closed on 25 April; 9617 proposals have been submitted, whereas 3000 proposals had been expected. In July, the invitations for stage 2 will be announced, deadline stage 2: 17 September 2007. The rejected proposals will be informed in August 2007. Final decisions on the 2nd stage are expected December 2007-January 2008.

The Call for Advanced Grants is to be expected by the end of July / beginning of August with an expected deadline in November 2007. Contrary to the Starting Grants a complete proposal has to be submitted in the first phase. Also an extended synopsis is required. This Call will have about 300 grants available.

From information of EG Liaison, it is clear that proposals should not be submitted twice (they make no chance). Part of the proposal is a section in which researchers have to make clear that they need the grant to establish or to concolidate their first research team. The research itself really should make scientific advancements. Multidisciplinary research and high risk/high gain proposals may have a good chance.

Summary

Digitale signal processing plays an important role within sensor systems for i.e. (mobile) communication, radar, radio astronomic etc. A concept that is able to realize multiple run-time functions is a phased array antenna system. One can think of a (multi-dimensional) array system, by way of baseband digital processing on massive data streams of a multi-channel antenna array. This variety of functionality requires support for a broad range of standards, therefore a run-time reconfigurable digital streaming processing concept is needed. Research on digital signal processing is vital for the technological knowlegde within the Netherlands. Topics:

·

Tiled antenna processing architecture

·

Streaming processing

·

Flexibility & efficiency

·

Run-time dynamic configuration
