  • Awarded Grants

Discover our faculty's latest research achievements! Explore the attached document summarising 58 awarded grants across 18 research groups from December 2023 to July 2024.

  • News from the Research Groups

Below you will find an overview of some notable news items provided by some of the EEMCS departments. Would you like your news item to be included in this overview? Please email us at research-support-news-eemcs@utwente.nl.

    • No more sleep-induced lectures

In a unique experiment, researchers at the University of Twente conducted simultaneous brain measurements on 20 students. During an hour-long lecture that alternated between passive and interactive, researchers wanted to learn more about changes in students' concentration during lectures. This could lead to wearable technology that tells the lecturer that students' attention is fading.

    • Anna Sperotto appointed as professor in Active Network Resilience

From 1 February 2024, Anna Sperotto has been appointed as a professor in the chair 'Active Network Resilience' at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.

Resilience is, broadly said, the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. In the context of the Internet – an open, distributed and highly redundant architecture – one would assume that resilience almost comes for free as it is implicitly embedded in the technology.  However, in practice, this is far from reality. The complexity of the Internet as a whole and how dependent we are on it as a society are such that resilience now needs to be closely guarded.

    • Roland van Rijswijk-Deij appointed as prfessor on the chair Data-Driven Internet Security

From 1 February 2024, Roland van Rijswijk-Deij has been appointed as a professor in the chair: 'Data-Driven Intern Security' at the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.

Van Rijswijk-Deij’s research focuses on defending the Internet against malicious activity and on strengthening the security and resilience of the Internet by improving protocols and operations, and the deployment of new security protocols and mechanisms. His research uses an empirical approach to these challenges by performing global Internet-scale passive and active measurements.

    • Peter Veltink appointed as interim-dean

From 15 April, Prof.dr.ir. P.H. (Peter) Veltink will act as interim dean of the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente. The position became vacant after Joost Kok announced his departure as dean of the faculty earlier this year.

Peter Veltink is already part of the faculty's board, serving as a portfolio holder for research. Veltink is also a professor of human-function recovery technology in the Department of Biomedical Signals and Systems.

    • Pilot: Resarch Output Registration

Our research information system Pure is the main source of information for most evaluations & reports; and it also serves as an open access repository for any uploaded files. In order to improve the coverage and data quality EEMCS and the university library will be trialing a new workflow the coming weeks.

During this pilot the library will be adding research output to Pure for all EEMCS Computer Science groups. Additionally, they will check all items of the past few years and make sure all metadata is correct. During this pilot we will be in close touch and evaluate continuously; and afterwards we will determine how much this pilot has improved the contents of Pure. Depending on these results EEMCS will decide if they want to use this service for the entire faculty in the future.

If you have any questions about this pilot, or the registration of research output in general, please contact either our Pure specialist Ard Sprenger or our Information Specialist Samuel Mok

    • Personal Homepages

The Faculty Board, responding to the request from the Computer Science discipline, has made arrangements with LISA for a personal homepage service. Currently, this service is only offered within EEMCS.

More information can be found on the EEMCS Intranet.

      Niek Raeimakers

My name is Niek Raeimakers, and on October 1, 2023, I started as Account and Product Manager for the LISA department. I am 39 years old and live in Tubbergen with my wife and two kids. In my spare time, I enjoy sports (football, skiing and hiking), spending time with family and friends, and I really enjoy good food and a delicious glass of wine.

Before this, I ran my own company (BlueTree) in the field of data services and custom software solutions. It was a great and educational period, but I still decided to take on this wonderful challenge within the UT. After selling my company, I started at the UT and will take over the responsibilities within EEMCS from Tonnie Tibben. I am also responsible for all services within the UT, such as finance, marketing, HR, etc.

I look back on the start with a good feeling and am happy with the contacts with my new colleagues. I look forward to contributing to optimising research, innovation, and education at EEMCS!

      Mart Deterd

My name is Mart Deterd, 30 years old, and I have now been working for about 2 ½ years at the University of Twente.

The first two years I worked as a project controller where I would financially support researchers during their running projects.

Since May 2023, I started as a financial project manager, supporting researchers with the (financial) preparation of their proposal.

Once the project gets granted, you can contact me so I can set up the project in our administrative systems and assign you a financial contact person (project controller) who can help you during the project.
