Celebrating Women in Science: Two UT Researchers Awarded Prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO Fellowships.
The Dutch L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship program plays a pivotal role in supporting the scientific careers of talented young women in the Life Sciences and STEM fields. With the long-term goal of increasing the number of women professors in the Netherlands, the program fosters groundbreaking research and encourages visibility of female scientists across disciplines. We are proud to announce that two exceptional researchers from the University of Twente have been awarded the For Women in Science Awards 2025, each receiving a €30,000 fellowship to conduct five months of advanced research at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS).
Džemila Šero (EEMCS Faculty)
Artist Fingerprints: Using AI to Analyze Cultural Heritage
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming many scientific disciplines, yet its application in cultural heritage remains underexplored. Džemila Šero aims to change this. Her research focuses on the virtual analysis of fingerprints on terracotta artworks, using advanced imaging techniques and AI-based analysis.
While AI has proven effective in analyzing damaged fingerprints on paper, it is rarely applied to art objects. There is currently no standard method for collecting or interpreting these unique traces of human touch in art. Šero's interdisciplinary approach could open new doors in understanding the identities and techniques of artists from the past.
Trang Duong (ET Faculty)
Engineering Climate-Resilient Coastal Futures
Trang Duong develops innovative strategies to protect coastal communities from the growing threat of rising sea levels. Her research emphasizes sustainable and climate-resilient engineering solutions that integrate environmental, technological, and social dimensions.
About the Fellowship Program
