FAQ Money Matters

On this page, you will find frequently asked questions about financial matters for you as a student.

  • How much are the tuition fees?

    If you are a national of an EU/EEA country you are likely to pay the so-called ‘statutory tuition fee’. This fee is determined and subsidized by the Dutch government. The statutory tuition fee applies to most / but not all EU/EEA countries and/or master’s programmes (also see ‘Institutional tuition fee’).

    Check our tuition fee page for more information.

    What are the tuition fees when I take longer to finish my studies?

    You are required to pay tuition fees for the duration of your enrolment. This means that if you take longer to graduate (i.e. it takes you 3 years instead of 2 years to complete your study programme), you will be required to pay an additional amount of tuition fee. The amount will be calculated based on the duration of your enrolment at UT.

  • How do I pay my tuition fee?

    There are several ways in which you can pay the tuition and exam fees. Check our website for more information on the different payment methods.

    • Payment by (digital) authorisation in five instalments
    • Payment by (digital) authorisation in one instalment
    • Single transfer
    • Exemption through certification tuition fees paid

    Dutch law requires non-EU students to pay tuition fees beforehand at once. If this applies to you, you will be informed about this during the visa procedure.

    Changing your payment method

    To change your payment method, go to Studielink and arrange your payment changes.

  • Am I eligible for a transitional arrangement for institutional tution fee rates?

  • How do I change my bank account number?

    If you wish to change your bank account number, please go to Studielink.

  • What do I pay when I want to follow a second bachelor's or master's?

    Bachelor's

    In The Netherlands, when you already obtained a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral degree or engineering degree, you pay the institutional rate for the second bachelor's degree. There is one exception to this rule: if you start a second programme during your first.

    The law makes an exception to this rule for students who have started a second programme before completing their first, and who follow this second programme continuously. You thus need to have started your second programme while following the first programme. If you continue to follow a second study that started during a first study, you are exempt from tuition fees for your second study during your registration for the first study. After disenrolment from your first study, you pay the statutory tuition fee for your second (continuous) study if you also meet the applicable requirements.

    Master's

    The statutional fee only applies to a first master programme. If you have obtained a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral, or an engineering degree in the Netherlands, you pay the institutional fee for the second master's programme. There are two exceptions to this rule:

    • Starting a second programme during your first

      The law makes an exception to this rule for students who have started a second programme before completing their first, and who follow this second programme continuously. You thus need to have started your second programme while following the first programme. • Second master programme at UT with the institutional rate equal to the statutory rate

      UT-students who were eligible for statutory fee during their first master programme at UT, pay an institutional fee equal to the statutory fee for their second master programme.

      UT-studenten die bij de eerste masteropleiding in aanmerking kwamen voor het wettelijk tarief betalen voor hun tweede masteropleiding een instellingstarief ter hoogte van het wettelijk tarief. The conditions for completing a second master programme at the University of Twente for an institutional rate equal to the statutory rate are as follows:

      • The arrangement only applies to a second master programme;
      • The arrangement only applies to students who completed their first master's degree no more than 3 academic years ago;
      • The arrangement applies to successive studies in government-funded education, which means consecutively or with an interval (i.e. not parallel);
      • The arrangement only applies to students who were eligible for the statutory rate for the first master's degree (in general, these are EEA students and non-EEA students who were already entitled to the statutory rate);
      • The arrangement only applies to students who also followed and completed their first master programme at UT;
      • An exception to this rule is when you follow a teaching for secondary education programme3 at UT.
  • What do I have to pay for a pre-master's?

    Tuition fees for Pre-master's students

    There is no fixed tuition fee for a pre-master's programme at UT, since the length and study load of a pre-master's may vary per student. Programmes can vary from 15 to 60 EC. To follow a pre-master's you have to pay an amount per EC. The total amount is based on the number of ECs from your pre-master's.

    • The amount per EC is set at €42.17 for the academic year of 2024-2025.
    • The amount per EC is set at €43.35 for the academic year 2025-2026.

    Two examples (2025-2026)

    Your pre-master's is 30 EC: you will pay € 43,35 x 30 EC = € 1.300,50
    Your pre-master's is 45 EC: you will pay € 43,35 x 45 EC = € 1.950,75

    European Credit Transfer System

    Student workload at Dutch universities is expressed in EC, also named ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which is widely used throughout the European Union. In the Netherlands, each credit represents 28 hours of work.

  • I have not yet received a confirmation of payment. How do I get one?

    You will not receive a confirmation from us after you have transferred the tuition fees. There may be several situations applicable.

    When you log in to your Studielink account you can see your current status:

    1. If your status says “registered” then your authorization or payment has been received in good order. This is your confirmation, you will not receive another one from us.
    2. If your status is not yet "registered" and you have opt to pay by direct debit there is a chance that you have not yet confirmed the direct debit in Studielink. Please go to Studielink and confirm your direct debit authorisation.
    3. If your status is not yet "registered" and you transferred the fee yourself:
      1. chances are that we have received your payment, but you are still in our registration process and your registration has not yet been fully processed by our employees. Your payment is not yet linked, this will happen as soon as we complete your registration.
      2. and we have completed your registration, but the tuition fees are not received, there is a shortage of tuition fees, or we cannot link the tuition fees due to missing name or student number whith the transfer; you are not yet fully registered and you will receive a reminder to pay us. When you do we ask you to contact Student Services when you have already completed the payment. We can then see why the payment is not yet linked.
  • If I wish to study for two degrees simultaneously, do I pay double?

    No, you only pay the tuition fee for one programme. You pay for the programme which charges the highest amount. If, for instance, you want to do a bachelor's along with your pre-master's then you pay for the bachelor's. If you want to do two masters at once, then you pay the tuition fee for one master's.

  • I have received a reminder for the payment of my tuition fee, now what?

    If we are unable to withdraw (an instalment of) your tuition fee, we will send you a reminder. Regardless whether you yourself pay or another person does this for you. You have two weeks to arrange payment, if we have not received the tuition fee after this time period there will be consequences for your enrolment.

    Notice of default

    In case we do not receive any payment from you after our reminder, we will send you a notice of default. Regardless of whether you or another person pays. We will then allow a few days to transfer the tuition fee to us still for you to transfer the money immediately upon receipt of the default of notice. If we do not receive the tuition fee at all then you will be disenrolled and the invoice due will be sent to a summoner.
