Overview tuition fees

How much tuition fee do you annually pay for a study programme at UT?

When studying at a university, you need to pay a tuition fee. Two types of tuition fees exist: statutory tuition fees and institutional fees. Click on the link below to find out how much tuition fee you have to pay.

Master's February intake

If you start in February, your first academic year will run from February to August. When you join in February, you will initially pay an amount for the period from February 1 to August 31, so 7 months in total. The amounts mentioned for the February intake are therefore 7/12 of the annual amount. Then, from September onwards, you pay again for an entire academic year, or the rates for the September intake of the following year.

Do you have questions about tuition fee?

Below, we provide answers to frequently asked questions and specific exceptional situations. Is your question not listed? Please don't hesitate to contact Student Services in the Contact Centre.

  • What type of tuition fee do I need to pay?

    Statutory tuition fee

    You pay the statutory tuition fee when you meet the following three requirements:

    • You will enrol or are enrolled at a study programme at a university of applied sciences (hbo) or university.
    • You have the Dutch nationality, the nationality of another EU/EER country1, Switserland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Suriname, or you have a specific Dutch residence permit that qualifies.
    • At the start of the academic year, you have not yet obtained a comparable diploma. That is, if you enrol for a bachelor, you have not yet obtained a bachelor diploma.

    For specific categories an excemption is made. You never pay more than the statutionary tuition fee rate when you meet the first two aforementioned conditions and:

    • you already have a (bachelor's or master's) degree, but will now follow a programme in the area of healthcare2, and have not previously started a programme in the area of healthcare2 or teaching for secondary education3.
    • you already have one or multiple (bacelor's or master's) degrees, but will follow a programme in teaching for secondary education3.  When following a programme to certify as a teacher in secondary education, you are always entitled to an institutional tuition fee rate equal to the statutionary tuition fee rate.
    • you have started the second programme during the first programme and followed this programme, even after obtaining a degree for the first programme, continuously.

    Institutional tuition fee

    When you do not meet the requirements for statutionary tuition fee, you have to pay the institutional fee.

    Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain or Sweden

    At the University of Twente, the following Bachelor's programmes apply Gezondheidswetenschappen and Klinische Technologie (Technische Geneeskunde).

    The University of Twente does not offer education programmes at bachelor's level.

  • How can I pay the tuition fees?

    At Studielink you can indicate how you want to pay your tuition fee. There are 4 possibilities for paying your tuition fees:

    1. Payment via (digital) authorisation in 5 installments
    2. Payment via (digital) authorisation in 1 installment
    3. Transferring the full fee manually by a single transfer
    4. Exemption through certification tuition fees paid

    Would you like to know more on the payment options, go take a look at the Studielink page on payment options.

    Have you specified a payment option, but want to change it, or do you want to change your bank account number? You can complete the change form and submit it to Student Services.

  • What do I have to pay for a pre-master's?

    Tuition fees for Pre-master's students

    There is no fixed tuition fee for a pre-master's programme at UT, since the length and study load of a pre-master's may vary per student. Programmes can vary from 15 to 60 EC. To follow a pre-master's you have to pay an amount per EC. The total amount is based on the number of ECs from your pre-master's.

    The amount per EC is set at €38.57 for the academic year of 2023-2024.

    The amount per EC is set at €42.17 for the academic year of 2024-2025.

    Two examples (2023-2024)

    Your pre-master's is 30 EC: you will pay € 42,17 x 30 EC = € 1.265,10
    Your pre-master's is 45 EC: you will pay € 42,17 x 45 EC = € 1.897,65

    European Credit Transfer System

    Student workload at Dutch universities is expressed in EC, also named ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which is widely used throughout the European Union. In the Netherlands, each credit represents 28 hours of work.

  • What do I pay when I want to follow a second bachelor's or master's programme?

    Bachelor's

    In The Netherlands, when you already obtained a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral degree or engineering degree, you pay the institutional rate for the second bachelor's degree. There is one exception to this rule: if you start a second programme during your first.

    The law makes an exception to this rule for students who have started a second programme before completing their first, and who follow this second programme continuously. You thus need to have started your second programme while following the first programme. If you continue to follow a second study that started during a first study, you are exempt from tuition fees for your second study during your registration for the first study. After disenrolment from your first study, you pay the statutory tuition fee for your second (continuous) study if you also meet the applicable requirements.

    Master's

    The statutional fee only applies to a first master programme. If you have obtained a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctoral, or an engineering degree in the Netherlands, you pay the institutional fee for the second master's programme. There are two exceptions to this rule:

    • Starting a second programme during your first

      The law makes an exception to this rule for students who have started a second programme before completing their first, and who follow this second programme continuously. You thus need to have started your second programme while following the first programme. If you continue to follow a second study that started during a first study, you are exempt from tuition fees for your second study during your registration for the first study. • Second master programme at UT with the institutional rate equal to the statutory rate

      UT-students who were eligible for statutory fee during their first master programme at UT, pay an institutional fee equal to the statutory fee for their second master programme.

      UT-studenten die bij de eerste masteropleiding in aanmerking kwamen voor het wettelijk tarief betalen voor hun tweede masteropleiding een instellingstarief ter hoogte van het wettelijk tarief. The conditions for completing a second master programme at the University of Twente for an institutional rate equal to the statutory rate are as follows:

      • The arrangement only applies to a second master programme;
      • The arrangement only applies to students who completed their first master's degree no more than 3 academic years ago;
      • The arrangement applies to successive studies in government-funded education, which means consecutively or with an interval (i.e. not parallel);
      • The arrangement only applies to students who were eligible for the statutory rate for the first master's degree (in general, these are EEA students and non-EEA students who were already entitled to the statutory rate);
      • The arrangement only applies to students who also followed and completed their first master programme at UT;
      • An exception to this rule is when you follow a teaching for secondary education programme3 at UT.

  • Will I get a restitution when I de-enrol?
    • Have you obtained a diploma (with certificate)?
    • Are you (temporarily) quitting your studies?

    Then you need to submit a de-enrolment request via Studielink. You need to make this request in the month that you will quit your studies, at the latest at 31 May. De-enrolment requests that are submitted at a later moment cannot be processed, so make sure to be on time!

    You will receive a restitution of 1/12th of the paid tuition fee for each month that you finished your programme earlier than the end of the academic year. When you stop in June, July or August, restitution is no longer possible.

    When you are eligible for a restitution, the amount will be refunded automatically. Please note that it may take a couple of days before the money actually reaches your account. More information and the exact dates of restitution can be found on our restitution page.

    Examples restitution tuition fees

    • When you de-enrol per 1 November, you will receive 10/12 of your tuition fee.
    • When you de-enrol in May per 1 June, you will receive 3/12 of your tuition fee.
    • When you de-enrol per 1 July, you will not receive a restitution.

    If you submit your de-enrolment requests in the collection months (September, November, January, March, and May) before the 15th of the month, we can process this request in time so that no (full) installment will be collected. If you de-enrol after the 15th, a full installment will be collected and you will be eligible for a refund.

  • Will my application fee be refunded?

    The application fee is only applicable to students with an international prior education, who want to follow a master programme of the faculty EEMCS and/or ET. The application fee is non-refundable when you first apply from the September 2023 intake onwards.

    Have you applied for an earlier intake (September 2021, 2022 and/or February 2022, 2023) for a programme that you will now start, please contact Student Services.

  • When am I eligible for halving of tuition fees?

    As per academic year 2024-2025 (per 1 September 2024) the halving of tuition fee will be stopped. For more information, frequently asked questions, and an infographic, please see the government page of Rijksoverheid (in Dutch).
