Warm sweater day: turn down the heat and save energy join the national climate action on friday 11 february

Put on a warm sweater, turn down the heat in your home or office, and lower your emissions. That’s the simple premise behind the annual ‘warme truiendag’, or warm sweater day, on Friday 11 february. Green Hub Twente - the central point for sustainability knowledge and initiatives at the University of Twente - and the Student Union support this national initiative and ask everyone at the UT to join in by lowering the temperature by at least one degree. Don’t have a suitable warm sweater? No worries: all UT sweaters and hoodies are 40% off at the Union Shop in the Bastille this week. So put on a nice sweater, turn down the heat and save some energy!

Take a picture of you and your fellow students or co-workers in a warm sweater and send it to Green Hub Twente!

Raising awareness, lowering emissions

By supporting warm sweater day, the Green Hub and Student Union want to raise awareness about energy use. “We hope everyone at the UT joins us by lowering the thermostat at home or at the office if possible.” says Marlen Braun, Student Green Officer at the Green Hub Twente. “According to the organization of Warm Sweater Day, turning down the thermostat by a single degree saves about 6% of CO2 emissions caused by heating. The beauty of it is that this is a very simple measure that everyone can take themselves to immediately lower their carbon footprint. Not just on warm sweater day, but every cold day of the year.”

Selfie

“We know that many people, both students and staff, at the UT care about fighting climate change, and that the UT is working to become a more sustainable organization. So we hope that many people join us on Friday. Also, we’d love to make a collage of everyone who joins in, so take a selfie of yourself in a nice cozy sweater, tag us on Instagram or Facebook or send it to greenhub@utwente.nl!”

How to join

You can turn down the heating yourself by up to three degrees in rooms in the following UT buildings through the thermostats (or comset boxes) on the wall:

  • Carre
  • Ravelijn
  • Vrijhof
  • Horst - rings & tower
  • Zuidhorst
  • Spiegel - fifth floor
  • Bastille
  • Technohal

Unfortunately, it's not possible to turn down the heating per room in other UT buildings. Of course, at the home office you can lower the temperature yourself as well.
