International Baccalaureate

Start your application for a bachelor's

Admission Requirements

With the International Baccalaureate diploma, you will probably be admissible to a bachelor's programme at the University of Twente. This depends on the subjects and their corresponding levels you have achieved. A successfully completed International Baccalaureate diploma is required before the start of the academic year. In general, there is no minimum IB grade requirement. Besides the requirements from the IBO organization for you to graduate with your full IB Diploma. If you will be (conditionally) admitted based upon IB certificates in combination with another high school diploma, the possible grade requirement will be mentioned within your (conditional) admission letter.

The ‘Career-related Certificate of the International Baccalaureate’ is not directly admissible to the University of Twente. However, if you have obtained an additional diploma/degree besides or after your ‘Career-related Certificate of the International Baccalaureate’, the University of Twente advise you to apply as those applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis (there is no guaranteed admission).

For students having a high school diploma (other than the International Baccalaureate Diploma), but with DP Course results (previously: Certificate), the University of Twente advise you to apply as those applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis (there is no guaranteed admission).

Note: the admission office reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the admissibility of your application. The admission requirements mentioned are for your information only.

The admission requirements can change per intake moment. The requirements are announced in October for the following September intake moment. The University of Twente therefore cannot provide any information regarding admission requirements for future intake moments that are not yet open for applications. Please check the current admission requirements as advice, until the new admission requirements for the specific intake have been announced.

Documents required for application

Already graduated?
Upload your official International Baccalaureate Diploma programme and official final transcript of records. It should be two pages, one page containing your diploma and one page containing your official final transcript of records. Please request your diploma via your International Baccalaureate institute. The University of Twente (school code 001638) needs this document to finalize your application and enrolment.

Not graduated yet?
Please upload an official document from your school with your International Baccalaureate predicted grades per subject and the language of instruction per subject. Make sure the official IB subjects names are mentioned on the document. The information that we prefer to see addition to the predicted grades are:

The University of Twente understands that some schools have a policy to not provide the predicted results to their students. If this applies to you, please have your school send your predicted grades as mentioned above to Student Services. Please make sure they include your name and UT student number (you will get this number once you have applied to the University of Twente) in the subject title. In your application, please upload your most recent transcript of records and a self-written document in which you state that your school will provide your predicted grades to the UT directly (if possible please also provide the email address of the sender).

English Language requirement

There are several options to meet the English language requirement:

  1. If your instruction language during your two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma programme is English and you have one of the English exam subjects you are exempted from the English language test. During your application, you need to upload proof that your International Baccalaureate Diploma programme instruction language is English.
  2. If your instruction language is English but you do not have an English exam subject, you have to take an additional English language test as mentioned in our general language requirements.
  3. If your instruction language is not English and you do not have an English exam subject, you have to take an additional English language test as mentioned in our general language requirements.
  4. If the instruction language during your two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma programme is not English, you can still get an exemption if you pass with a grade 5 or higher for one of the English courses. If you do not meet the grade 5 requirement, you need to do an additional English language test that is mentioned in our general language requirements. We advise you to do the English language test if you have doubts about your final English language grade.

Not the required grade, subject or level?

If you do not have the required grade, subject, or subject level, you might be eligible to do an additional test(s) if your overall level is equivalent to the Dutch VWO-Level. The University of Twente only accepts certificates from CCVX, James Boswell-Bèta (both online and physical tests from James Boswell-Bèta are accepted, contact them about the online possibilities), Korteweg-de Vries, or the Dutch so-called 'Staatsexamen'. The OMPT test is not accepted by the University of Twente.

The test must be passed with a positive result and should be taken before the deadline. Please submit your application to the University of Twente before you make a reservation for one of the tests (to prevent possibly unnecessary costs). The University of Twente assesses on individual bases whether you are eligible for such a test and inform you via email after a submitted application. You can continue your application the first time by answering with ‘No, I still have to complete a *subject* test’ if you are unsure if you meet the additional admission requirements. You will get additional questions about uploading a reservation, which you can skip as they are not mandatory. After submitting your application, you will be informed via email.

The Netherlands has different Mathematics subjects. For the social sciences bachelor's programmes, VWO Mathematics A is required. For the technical bachelor's programmes, VWO Mathematics B is required. For the subjects Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology you have to take the VWO Level, there are no sublevels like Mathematics.

Still need to graduate?

You can always apply even when you still have to graduate. Most of the prospective students are still in their last year of high school when they start their application. Please be aware that you need to be graduated in the school year prior to the start of the academic year.

A high grade obtained for a Standard Level subject does not substitute the subject on a Higher Level when the subject is required on a Higher Level. Please check ‘Not the required grade, subject or level?’.

Please apply if you hold an IB diploma with the previous curriculum (different mathematics subjects) and we will review your admission requirements based on the previous curriculum.
