Admission requirements Bachelor's programmes

Start your application for a bachelor's

Are you a prospective student holding a foreign secondary school diploma equivalent to the Dutch vwo-diploma?

The University of Twente closely reviews all applications individually due to their distinctive nature. Therefore, the only way to determine admissibility is by submitting an official application for enrolment via Studielink and providing all required documentation in Osiris. After you have done so, you will be informed about your admissibility as soon as possible via email.

Still need to graduate?

You can always apply even when you still have to graduate. Most of the prospective students are still in their last year of high school when they start their application. Please be aware that you need to be graduated in the school year prior to the start of the academic year.

Please be advised that the decision is based upon the diplomas or degrees obtained, or to be obtained, before 1 September. If you cannot meet the English language requirement, you have to make an additional test as mentioned on the website.

  • (International) Foundation Year

The University of Twente offers a foundation year called Twente Pathway College (TPC), operated by Navitas, a partner of the university. However, TPC manages its own application deadlines, admission requirements, tuition fees, and related matters. For detailed information, please visit their website, where all necessary information can be found.

Foundation years from other countries/institutions will only be accepted if the resulting diploma/certificate is officially accredited and recognised as a national qualification in the country where the foundation year is completed. Relevant documentation (such as national accreditation and recognition) must be uploaded within your application. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to verify whether your foundation year meets these criteria, as many foundation programmes are not accredited or recognised by the national database of their respective countries. After submitting your application, it will be reviewed case by case (there is no guaranteed admission). In case of possible acceptance, additional test(s) might be required. Please see further information about the Dutch educational system and routes if you are not directly admissible.

If you are doing an (international) foundation year in the UK and wish to know whether it is accredited as a national qualification, it should be assigned an OFQUAL number and registered in the OFQUAL register.

  • Transfer (credits) to the University of Twente

It is possible to transfer (credits) to the University of Twente from another institution, whether in the Netherlands or abroad, provided you meet the admission requirements. However, please note that not all courses you have completed will automatically qualify for exemptions towards your degree at the University of Twente. Upon (conditional) admission and official enrolment in your chosen bachelor’s programme, you will need to apply for these exemptions. The programme committee will determine whether you are eligible for any exemptions. In all cases, you will start your studies in the first year of the bachelor’s programme.

These admission requirements are valid for the September 2025 intake.

The admission requirements can change per intake moment. The requirements are announced in October for the following September intake moment. The University of Twente therefore cannot provide any information regarding admission requirements for future intake moments that are not yet open for applications. Please check the current admission requirements for advice, until the new admission requirements for the specific intake have been announced.

Note: the admission office reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the admissibility of your application. The admission requirements mentioned are for your information only.

Not the required grade, subject or level?

If you do not have the required grade, subject, or subject level, you might be eligible to do an additional test(s) if your overall level is equivalent to the Dutch VWO-Level. The University of Twente only accepts certificates from CCVX, James Boswell-Bèta (both online and physical tests from James Boswell-Bèta are accepted, contact them about the online possibilities), or the Dutch 'Staatsexamen'. The OMPT and Korteweg-de Vries tests are not accepted by the University of Twente.

The test must be passed with a positive result and should be taken before the deadline. Please submit your application to the University of Twente before you make a reservation for one of the tests (to prevent possibly unnecessary costs). The University of Twente assesses on individual bases whether you are eligible for such a test and inform you via email after a submitted application. You can continue your application the first time by answering with ‘No, I still have to complete a *subject* test’ if you are unsure if you meet the additional admission requirements. You will get additional questions about uploading a reservation, which you can skip as they are not mandatory. After submitting your application, you will be informed via email.

The Netherlands has different Mathematics subjects. For the social sciences bachelor's programmes, VWO Mathematics A is required. For the technical bachelor's programmes, VWO Mathematics B is required. For the subjects Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology you have to take the VWO Level, there are no sublevels like Mathematics.

Type of education

Higher education in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, we distinguish between two types of higher education:

  1. Research-oriented higher education (wetenschappelijk onderwijs or WO in Dutch)
  2. Higher professional education (hoger beroepsonderwijs or HBO in Dutch)

Research-oriented education
Research-oriented education is traditionally offered by research universities, such as the University of Twente. The programmes at research universities focus on theoretical aspects of the field of study and prepare students for undertaking independent research. These lead to a so-called WO bachelor’s or WO master’s degree. It is also possible to pursue a PhD degree at a research university.

Higher professional education
Higher professional education is offered by universities of applied sciences. The programmes at universities of applied sciences prepare students for particular professions and tend to be more practically oriented. They lead to either a so-called HBO bachelor’s or HBO master’s degree.

Direct access to a bachelor’s degree at a research university
Your prior education will need to correspond with the pre-university level of a Dutch VWO diploma, to be granted direct access to a bachelor’s degree at a research university. However, if your prior education level is not equivalent to the Dutch VWO, you may still be admissible to a university of applied sciences which also provides higher education. Here you can find out more about the education system of the Netherlands.

Not admissible?

The University of Twente decides if a student is admissible based upon the diplomas or degrees obtained, or to be obtained, before 1 September. Only diplomas or degrees that are officially recognised and accredited within the relevant country will be considered, and a certificate or diploma must be awarded upon completion. It should be at least equivalent to Dutch pre-university education (called ‘VWO’ in Dutch). Students with a secondary education, which is not equivalent to Dutch pre-university education (called ‘VWO’ in Dutch), cannot be admitted directly.

Please note that the Dutch VWO diploma requires a minimum of 14 years of education. However, this does not imply that every foreign/international diploma with a duration of 14 years is equivalent to the Dutch VWO level. Several different aspects are reviewed to assess the admissibility.

  • To become possibly eligible for admission, the following options are suggested.

You can become eligible for admission if you successfully complete the Twente Pathway College International Foundation Year, provided by Navitas. Navitas offers a Twente Pathway College International Foundation Year for prospective students at the University of Twente who do not meet the entry requirements. If you believe this option provides you with the opportunities you are looking for, please check if your diploma is eligible for admission and if the bachelor’s programme of your choice offers the pathway. Please know that admission is also regulated by Dutch national law, which influences the admission requirements.

Alternatively, you can complete a bachelor’s degree in a country outside the Netherlands and apply for a master’s programme afterwards, please see the master’s admission requirements.

Last, you can apply for a bachelor’s degree at a University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. As the Netherlands has a binary higher educational system there are two different types of bachelor’s degrees. There are two optional routes:

    1. Complete the bachelor’s degree at a University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands and apply for a master’s programme afterwards, please see the master’s admission requirements.
    2. Complete the first year of the bachelor’s degree at a University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands successfully (60ECTS) and apply for a bachelor’s programme at the University of Twente. This degree is called HBO Propedeuse (HBO-P), completing does not give you guaranteed access to a bachelor’s at the University of Twente. As stated in the admission requirement, the applications are assessed on individual bases and in most cases, additional test(s) are required.
