Regional rostering from the perspective of employee preferences

Regioroster - Regional rostering from the perspective of employee preferences

The ageing population and the incresing shortage of care workers are putting the residential and home care sector under considerable pressure. Regiorooster focuses on a new approach to shift rostering, with job satisfaction at its core. The hypothesis is that satisfied employees are willing to work up to 15–20% more and remain in the sector for longer.

Regiorooster is investigating how staff preferences, HR policy and care demand can be better balanced in staff rosters. Organising this on a regional scale creates greater flexibility in the deployment of care staff. The project begins with a combination of focus groups, staff surveys and an analysis of organisational constraints. Based on this, an advanced mathematical optimisation model is being developed, which will be included in a prototype Decision Support System (DSS). This system will support care organisations to create efficient and staff-oriented rosters.

The innovation of Regiorooster lies in redesigning the relationship between staff and employer, whereby staff preferences take precedence whilst simultaneously taking into account the needs of organisations and clients. Practical implementation is being developed through co-creation with healthcare organisations and staff.

The project contributes to increased availability of healthcare staff and offers valuable insights into employee preferences that are more widely applicable within the healthcare sector.
