CHOIR PhD students win top awards at TechMed Research Day 2026CHOIR PhD candidate Chris Petri has been awarded the Best Poster Presentation at the TechMed Research Day 2026 for his work on improving patient admission decisions in aftercare. His project, “Deciding on Patient Admission in Aftercare,” focuses on developing a decision-support algorithm for aftercare institutions, such as nursing homes, to safely determine if a patient can be admitted. By incorporating uncertainties in patient inflow, bed occupancy, and nurse availability, Chris’s model helps reduce workload peaks for healthcare staff, an urgent challenge in Dutch elderly care. The project is supervised by Richard Boucherie, Daniela Guericke, and Anne Zander.Read more
University of Twente and Labmicta Join Forces to Improve Laboratory ProcessesThe University of Twente (UT) and medical microbiology laboratory Labmicta are joining forces to optimise laboratory processes with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotisation. In the coming years, they will collaborate on innovative solutions to enhance laboratory diagnostics, making them faster, more efficient, and more sustainable. This should lead to improved patient care, as healthcare providers can make diagnoses even faster and more accurately. Last week, the collaboration, which also stimulates the regional economy and innovative strength, was officially ratified during a signing moment. A PhD student will focus on research and implementation of AI and robotisation in laboratories, supervised by experts from both the UT and Labmicta.Read more
