Many of today's challenges in society cannot be solved by one discipline alone. Future-proof education prepares students for this and teaches them how to approach these complex challenges. The principle of Challenge Based Learning (CBL) helps students to tackle dynamic, complex and unpredictable problems. CBL is one of the components of the Shaping Expert Group Innovation of Education.
Challenge Based Learning is an important strategic priority for the University of Twente. But what does CBL mean and what is its added value to the UT? How can we work towards a shared understanding of CBL? The Shaping Expert Group Innovation of Education (SEG IoE) is addressing these questions.
CBL and the University of Twente
The University Education Committee (UC-Ow) has asked the SEG IoE to define Challenge Based Learning. The SEG IoE now conducts dialogues with, among others, students, teaching fellows and deans of various faculties. These dialogues have a clear goal: to come up with a ‘Twente’ definition of the concept of CBL, established with expertise from all corners of our university. This week an important first step was taken. On Wednesday 28 April, several experts came together in an online session to reflect on these aforementioned questions.
Follow-up workshops
The expert session has led to a number of building blocks regarding CBL. In two follow-up sessions in May 2021, these building blocks will then be assessed as to their usability, feasibility and added value. This will be done by a delegation of lecturers, students and programme directors. As a result, an advice for the UC-Ow will follow, containing a description of Challenge Based Learning, guidelines for describing challenges and a vision of the added value of CBL.
