If you like to do a combination of courses and work on a research project, this is also an option at our University. On this page, you will find the offer of courses and the application process.
What options are there?
In consultation with your supervisor, you can complete this option in various ways. There are four options:
- You follow a quartile (15 EC) of courses and the next quartile (15 EC) you work on a research project
- You follow one semester of courses (30 EC) and the following semester (30 EC) you work on a research project
- You follow courses for half a year and work on a research project at the same time (30 EC in total)
- You follow one year of courses and work on a research project at the same time (60 EC in total)
Course Offer for bachelor's students
Bachelor students will either follow modules (regular programme) or minors (electives). A module/minor is a package of 15 ECTS consisting of several courses and a project. You need to register for the module/minor as a whole, it's not possible to take separate courses.It takes one quartile (10 weeks) to finish one module/minor. On this page, you can read about how our educational system is structured.
Per semester, there are three options that you can choose from:

- 1. Choose two bachelor's modules per semester
A module is a package within a regular bachelor's programme where you address a current theme from society or business. You will engage in theoretical courses and practical work, design solutions by working individually, and participating in teamwork.
You may choose a maximum of one module at another faculty not covered by the exchange agreement with your home university.Choose a study programme in the list below to get to know your possibilities.

- 2. Choose two HTHT Minors per semester
A HTHT ('High Tech Human Touch') minor is an elective package outside the regular study programme with multidisciplinary approach. You will work together with students and staff of various disciplines from different faculties.

Besides taking only modules or only minors, you can also combine these options.
Course Offer for master's students
As a master's student, you can choose from two options:
- 1. Single master's courses
You can choose separate courses varying between 1 and 10 ECTS. The vast majority of courses have a study load of 5 ECTS. You have to choose a minimum of 60% of the courses within 1 faculty, covered by the exchange agreement with your home university.

How to apply
- Application process
- Nomination phase
If your home university is an official exchange partner of UT, your university has to nominate you via our Mobility Online system before the deadline. Get in touch with your home university to arrange your nomination.
- Start your application
After you have been nominated by your home university, you will receive a link via the University of Twente to start your application in the platform Mobility Online by creating an account.
Keep in mind: you have to meet the English language requirements, and the application deadlines. For questions about your application get in touch with Student Services.
- Submit your application including documents
After creating an account in Mobility Online, you take the following steps:
Step 1
You need to submit the following documents digitally:
- A valid international passport /ID card
- An original transcript of records in English; note that if you are a master's student you need to upload your bachelor's and master's transcript of records.
- English test results as indicated on our website.Step 2
In Mobility Online, you select the courses you wish to follow, worth up to a maximum of 15 ECTS per quartile.Step 3
Confirm your application before the deadline for assessment by UT. After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email. - Find a research group and supervisor
Simultaneously in completing your application, find a supervisor in your preferred research group.

Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth ObservationOn the websites of the research groups you can find the details of contact persons of that group. Send an email with your request including your CV (curriculum vitae), transcript of records, and motivation letter why you want to opt for a placement and which ideas you want to work on.
Discuss terms and conditions
When you have received a positive response from the research group, you need to discuss the terms and conditions of your placement. This means you have to agree on:- Content of the research project
- Start and end date (see application deadlines).
- Amount of ECTS (minimum of 5 ECTS and maximum 60 ECTS; 1 ECTS is 28 hours)
- Course code.Note that acceptance by the research group does not automatically mean that you are accepted for a placement at our university. Acceptance also depends on other administrative requirements, e.g. visa and placement period. It is not possible to inform you in advance (before applying) about the outcome of this administrative part of the assessment.
- Assessment of your application
The University of Twente will assess if you meet the requirements based on the information and the documents you have provided. We will also check whether you are eligble to follow the selected courses or modules/minors.
We aim to inform you about your admissibility within a few weeks after your application. In case your application is incomplete or additional information is needed, we will contact you.

- Upload your Learning Agreement
Once your documents and courses or modules/minors have been approved, you need to download and return a learning agreement via Mobility Online. The learning agreement needs to be signed by your home university, the University of Twente, and yourself.
Once the learning agreement has been approved by our University, you can download the acceptance letter via Mobility Online.
- Visa, housing and enrolment
Once you have been accepted in Mobility Online, you are ready for registration in our student information system Osiris.
Visa and student housing
Depending on your situation, UT will assist international students requiring an entry visa for the Netherlands. and finding student accommodation. You will be contacted by our Student Services by email about the steps to take.If you are an incoming exchange student who does not require an entry visa and/or residence permit, you need to find an accommodation yourself. Tip: create an account at Roomspot.

Enrolment
You will receive a confirmation email with login details for Osiris and details how to complete your enrolment. - Additional practicalities you need to arrange
- Arrange Health & Liability insurance
- Provide your contact information: When you have arranged a student accommodation, you need to fill in your contact information via the Online Application Form. Click on Contact information and fill in your travel information, address in the Netherlands and an emergency contact person from your home country. Complete this action as soon as possible.

UT organises an introduction period for new (international) students before the start of every Fall and Spring semester.
Kick-In introduction days
During the Kick-In, you will meet your fellow programme students, our campus, and Enschede. You will get invited via email by the Kick-In committee.Faculty introduction days
Our faculty exchange coordinator invites you via email to additional faculty days where you learn about practical exchange matters and get to know your programme, staff, and fellow exchange students. - During & after your exchange period
Extension: if you would like to extend your period, you need to have the approval of your home university and the faculty exchange coordinator at UT. Once you have the approval from your home university and UT, your enrolment will be extended.
The total duration of your stay can not exceed twelve months and depends if your residence permit can be extended.
Change of courses: In case you wish to change your module(s) or course(s), please contact your departmental exchange coordinator at UT before the start of the quartile.
Departure: when leaving The Netherlands, make sure to take the necessary steps mentioned at this website.
You will receive a Transcript of Records after your grade has been registered by your research group.
