Close the door to hackers: why secure passwords are so important

Phishing emails are a growing problem, and it's easy to fall for them. Recently, a phishing simulation was conducted, and it was found that many people couldn't tell the difference between a real and a fake email. Some even clicked on the link to change their password (read the UToday interview here). This shows how important it is to use secure passwords and prevent hackers from accessing our personal information and accounts.

In the past, we've all used boring passwords like "password1" or "1234", but now it's time to be more serious about our online security. The threat of cyberattacks is greater than ever, which is why it's important to know how to create secure passwords. Fortunately, you can soon participate in an online training on this topic, where you'll get useful tips on creating strong passwords and how to remember them.

When hackers gain access to our personal information and accounts, it can lead to identity theft and financial loss. This applies not only to individuals but also to organizations like universities. When a hacker gains access to an employee's or student's account, they can also access all the organization's data and research. This is something we want to prevent.

So how can you create a secure password? Here are a few tips:
  • Use several words and add numbers and symbols if possible
  • Use a password of at least 4 words, which is easier to remember
  • Avoid using personal information such as your name or date of birth.

The good news is that it will no longer be mandatory to change your password annually at UT. In recent years, we have taken new security measures, making it sufficient to adjust your password once according to the new guideline (at least 14 characters).

What is expected of you now?
Soon you will receive an invitation to an online training on secure passwords from "Security Education". In just a few minutes, you will know the basics of creating secure passwords, and you'll also get tips on how to remember them, for example, through a password vault.

More information is already available on the service portal for those who want to know more. Let's work together to create a safer online environment by using secure passwords and preventing hackers from accessing sensitive information. Close the door to hackers and ensure secure passwords!
