New extortion scheme

Despite all measures we have been taken as a university, you might occasionally find scam emails in your mailbox, threatening with for instance blackmailing and demanding bitcoins.

In the past criminals tried to blackmail people by claiming they hacked their computer. The extortionist's email would then claim they had used the webcam to record you while visiting a porn website. They would destroy the information if the victim payed a fee in bitcoin. Else they would send it to everyone in your address book. Of course they did not hack your computer. They did not record you at any time.

But now they have found other ways to scare people. They now claim they have dispatched someone to bomb the building you are working in. Again, you could stop the criminals by paying up. And again, too, the chances of the threat really happening are very, very slim.

So don't wory. But do report these messages to CERT-UT.
CERT-UT will investigate the email. If there is any chance the threat is real, we will inform the relevant parties.
If this is just a baseless threat CERT-UT will take measures to try to prevent these scams from reaching you in the future.
