Title: The fine line between life and death: Strategic location of automated external defibrillators

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are placed in public to decrease response time and increase survival rate from out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, many AEDs are barely used due to poor location choices. In this study, we develop an algorithm that dynamically creates candidate AED locations and chooses near-optimal locations for new AEDs. The strength of the algorithm is that large instances can easily be solved since locations are created dynamically, keeping the problem size manageable while being able to evaluate a very granular set of candidate AED locations. We apply this methodology to a case study from North Holland and show that the coverage of OHCAs can improve by 73.5%.

Derya Demirtas is an assistant professor at the Center for Healthcare Operations Improvement & Research (CHOIR) in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS) at the University of Twente. Her research focuses on operations research, optimization, data analytics, location theory and their applications to healthcare and public services.
Dr. Demirtas is a recipient of the NWO (Dutch Research Council) Veni grant (2019), American Heart Association (AHA) Young Investigator Award (2015), and the Best Poster Award by the National Association of EMS Physicians (2016). She is a finalist at INFORMS Case Competition (2020) and won the second place in the INFORMS Section on Public Sector Operations Research best paper competition (2012). Her research has been published in top journals such as Management Science, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Circulation. She was a visiting faculty in the Industrial and Systems Engineering and in the Center for Health & Humanitarian Systems at Georgia Tech, where she worked on humanitarian response.
