Newsletter quartile 1 2022-2023

Dear colleague,

We hope you are recharged and enjoyed a well-deserved holiday. Ravelijn and Cubicus are still rather quiet, but next week the activities will start again in full swing. We wish you lots of fun and satisfaction in your teaching and other activities this quartile!

As BMS Teaching Academy we have been working to set up a program for quartile 1, including activities on various topics, and launching Professional Learning Communities. To start the year right, we happily invite you to “eat, greet, and meet”, our year-opening event where you can meet colleagues and support staff all while enjoying some delicious lunch. We hope to see you there!

In this newsletter, we would like to share

EduTalks: the UT education podcast

A great way to be inspired in education is to share experiences with peers. Time however doesn’t always work in our favour and to still share UT teaching experiences together we’d like to showcase EduTalks.

Edutalks is an education podcast hosted by the CELT & TELT teams. In this podcast, teachers and alike are interviewed within our university about the educational innovation they integrate in their education. From different designs to the use of interactive media: this is about sharing experiences you can perhaps use as well!

The first pilot episode was recorded before summer with our very own BMS teachers Frederik Vos and Vincent Delke about their use of Serious Gaming, and you can listen to it either here or on Spotify. Next up are topics like the acceleration plan, comparative judgement and entrepreneurship in technical programmes. Do you want to be part of an episode as well, or do you have other feedback? Feel free to e-mail the team at edutalks@utwente.nl.

Activity series on student engagement to continue in the new semester

As the new semester starts, we will keep building on our series on “student engagement”, featuring activities and best practices on how to engage student in education, and more specifically on-campus education. In June, Robin van Emmerloot and Marloes Luttikhuis of the TELT team hosted a discussion with a mixed group (staff and students) on the topic of on-campus education and how/when this could add value. It was an interesting session! You can find a short recap online.

In July an interactive session presented by Martin Stienstra dived into the topic of experiential learning. In his teaching, he implemented activities in his course to actively involve students and confront them with experimentation and empathy as part of creating something new. Again, you can find a recap online.

As this is a relevant topic we are happy to announce the continuation of this series. In September the topic of microlectures (and how to integrate them with added value) will be covered, in October the use of challenging quizzes, group gamification and meaningful feedback. We hope to see you there!

Kick-start the year with Eat, Greet and Meet

This event is part of recurring set of informal lunch sessions, we want to bring staff together to exchange ideas and get inspired, while having some time to recharge. See activity calendar for dates

The campus is rather empty as teachers are enjoying their well-deserved holidays. Though, don’t let the silence fool you, new activities are being set up right as we speak. The BMS Teaching Academy is making sure that the next academic year will feature interesting events, new Professional Learning Communities will launch, and teacher professionalization activities continue to be set up.

With all these developments, a great start is to get inspired and meet (new) colleagues! The “Eat, Greet and Meet” lunch market is a combination of a poster market and a lunch session, with posters on interesting topics, and the possibility to ask questions to the BMS e-learning specialists and CELT/TELT educationalists. This session will be the start of a series of more informal gatherings for teachers.

Let’s start the year inspired and energised! If you wish you join for lunch, please sign up by this form (before August 25th 2022), such that we can order the right tasty lunch for you. You can always drop by regardless of signing up, then please bring your own lunch.

See you on: 1 September 2022, 12:15-13:45
Location: Ravelijn Atrium

You can always reach out to these colleagues, check their People Pages for contact details.

Question of the quartile

Starting this newsletter, we aim to give you some food for thought with the “question of the quartile”. You can share your thoughts on the BMS Teaching Community Teams, or at the Eat, Greet and Meet event. This quartile, the question is:

“Blended learning is a given, but how to do this best, and how quickly will we move?”
