Department of Molecules & Materials

Designing functional materials from the molecule up

The Department of Molecules & Materials develops molecular strategies to design, control, and program functionality in materials and interfaces. Our focus is on systems that operate under complex and dynamic conditions.

By combining chemistry, physics, and advanced characterization, we uncover how molecular organization and dynamics lead to functional behavior across length scales.

What we do

We create materials in which function is built directly into molecular structure. Our research connects:

  • Synthetic organic and polymer chemistry
  • Supramolecular design
  • Soft matter physics
  • Advanced interfacial characterization

This integrated approach allows us to design materials with predictable performance in real-world environments.
