Traffic is becoming increasingly busy. More and more people are choosing to drive, but it’s also getting more crowded on bike paths, leading to more accidents. "Innovations like electric bikes, fatbikes, and the F35 cycling highway between Enschede and Hengelo are causing cyclists to sometimes ride faster than is safe," say the researchers.
The researchers continue: "The goal of our study is to make cycling as enjoyable and safe as possible so that people will choose to cycle more often." To achieve this, the researcher is looking for participants who are willing to take part in experiments taking place over the next few weeks around the campus of the University of Twente and the Twekkelerveld area. Specifically, they are looking for non-cyclists, older people, and women.
What are we working on?
The research project Smart Connected Bicycles aims to make cycling safer, more reliable, and more comfortable. To achieve this, they have used cycling technologies on an electric bike that functions as a warning system.
The cycling technologies are similar to innovations in cars. "Smart technologies for drivers help them participate in traffic as safely as possible," say the researchers. The researchers want to understand which warnings and communication methods work well for cyclists. This will make cycling safer and more enjoyable, and hopefully, encourage people to choose cycling more often.
What do we ask of you?
When you participate in this study, you will cycle 3 laps of 4 km on an electric bike. A researcher will measure this. For the first lap, you will cycle as you normally would. For the second and third laps, you will cycle with a warning system that can alert you to certain situations in different ways. For example, you will wear special gloves that give a vibration signal when it is necessary to slow down due to a dangerous situation. After cycling, you will fill out a questionnaire. The study lasts about an hour. The route starts at the Citadel building at the University of Twente and goes through the Twekkelerveld.Wie kan er meedoen en wanneer?
People who are 18 years or older and are able to cycle can participate in this study.
