The University of Waterloo (UW) was founded in 1957, starting with engineering and cooperative education, which is still a world leading programme.
Located in the heart of Canada’s technology hub, the university has six faculties and 12 faculty-based schools with around 38000 full-time students. Furthermore the UW operates four affiliated and federated institutions.
For 28 consecutive years the UW has been awarded the title of most innovative university in Canada by MacLeans’s, a Canadian magazine and is ranked top Research University of the Year by Canada’s Research Infosource. Internationally UW is ranked 173th in the QS World University Ranking.
The University of Waterloo operates and manages 41 research centres and institutes and is a member of the U15, a group that represents 15 Canadian research universities. In 2007, they were awarded a $33M grant by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the largest grant awarded to any Canadian University.
Furthermore they operate a free startup incubator, called the Velocity program, which is available for students, faculty, and alumni. It is the largest free startup incubator in the world.
History of Collaboration
The collaboration with the UW has only recently developed to the university level and led to a formal MoU, which was signed in 2016.
There are however considerable research links and co-publications and strong potential on research institute level for collaboration (eg. MESA+, TechMed, DSI).The UW has expressed commitment on a decentral level to place postdocs with MESA+. In total, 18 UT researchers co-authored in highly cited 19 publications with 18 UW researchers
And even though the collaboration is still very recent and needs to be further developed, the UW has expressed strong interest to expand the partnership in research, internships, funds available for internships, and research placements in the Netherlands.
Due to interest from OostNL in Canada and strong industrial links of UW there are opportunities for industry collaboration as well.
