Chip Technology

Driving innovation from nanoscience to real-world applications

At the MESA+ Institute, we develop advanced chip technology, electronic, photonic, and lab-on-a-chip systems that make technology faster, smarter, and more sustainable. Collaborating with companies like ASML, NXP, TNO, Lionix, Democn, Bronkhorst, Micronit and PhotonDelta, we strengthen the Dutch and European semiconductor ecosystem.

Why Chips Matter

Chips power modern technology:

Our Strengths

Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC)

We develop photonic chips that use light instead of electricity to process and transmit information, enabling faster, more energy-efficient, and scalable technologies.
Our research covers the full spectrum, from materials and chip design to system integration and applications. We work with advanced platforms such as silicon nitride, aluminium oxide, and lithium niobate, optimising them for low loss, high bandwidth, and low power consumption.

Together with partners including QuiX Quantum, Lionix, Demcon, Superlight Photonics, and Aluvia, we turn photonic innovations into practical solutions for quantum computing, communications, sensing, and biosciences.
Through collaborations with PhotonDelta NL, PIX-Europe, and Quantum Delta NL, we help drive Europe’s integrated photonics ecosystem forward.

PiezoMEMS

We develop tiny piezoelectric chips that convert movement into electricity and vice versa. Used in IoT, healthcare, and automotive, our focus is on efficient, high-performance devices and scalable production, while collaborating with industry and supporting talent development for the next generation of technology.

Quantum Technologies

We develop quantum chips for computing, communication, and secure data transfer. Combining electronic and photonic approaches, we create ultra-efficient platforms for future quantum applications, supported by national and European programs such as Quantum Delta NL and Photonics for Quantum (P4Q).

Energy-Efficient Computing

We develop energy-saving chip technologies for smarter, more sustainable computing. Focusing on brain-inspired (neuromorphic) systems, we integrate electrical, optical, and magnetic effects, leading national collaborations such as NL-ECO and Mission 10x to drive the future of energy-efficient computing.

Organs-on-Chips

We develop microchips that replicate human organs to study health and disease without animal testing. By combining sensors, microtechnology, and stem cells, we create reliable platforms that accelerate medical research and the development of safer, more effective treatments.
