Organ-on-Chip Centre Twente at annual hDMT Consortium meeting 2023

The annual hDMT Consortium meeting on December 1st 2023 was again a great success. Univerity of Twente researchers were present in high numbers, presenting their interesting research progress over the last year.

The meeting was chaired by Nathalie Bravenboer (Amsterdam University Medical Center) and this year about 220 hDMT researchers registered for this event that was held in the Studio33 conference room in Amersfoort. After a welcome by Christine Mummery, chair of hDMT, senior scientists gave interesting lectures about several topics, including the use of biodegradable membranes in Organ-on-Chip, the power and limitations of adult stem cells, analytical methods for drug research, the training centre Skeletal Muscle-on-Chip, and the challenges and opportunities that will be addressed in the new hDMT Lung-on-Chip group. Young talents presented their latest results in high-quality presentations with research highlights on different Organ-on-Chip models. New this year was the poster session with 42 posters, and the poster pitches. As usual, Janny van den Eijnden-van Raaij, managing director of hDMT, informed the Consortium about the perspective of hDMT for the future.

University of Twente

In total 7 researchers from various groups at the University of Twente gave a lecture or a poster presentation. In the list below an overview of the researchers is given.

  • Huub Weener (AST) won the prize for best poster presentation with his work on Blood perfused Vessels-on-Chip show endothelial dysfunction after perfusion with CAR-T Tumor-on-Chip effluent.
  • Carla Cofiño Fabrés (AST) presented a poster pitch regarding: Understanding pathological implications of exercise in LMNA patients using a 3D hiPSC-CM disease model.
  • Francisco Conceição (AOT) presented a poster pitch titled: Exploring osteoblast-osteoclast interactions in an organ-on-chip model via biomimetic boneremodeling micro-units.
  • Nina Doorn (CNPH) gave a research highlight about: Beyond phenotyping: Computational modeling to unravel patient-hiPSC derived neuronal networks.
  • Mariel Cano-Jorge (AST) gave a research highlight about: Engineered cardiac chamber recapitulating the pump function of the heart
  • Devin Veerman (AST) presented a poster on his work: Retina-on-chip: Designing a PDMS-based Microfluidic Chip with 2 µm-thick Membranes for Co-Culture of iPSC-Derived Retinal Pigment Epithelium and Retinal Organoids.
  • José Manuel Rivera-Arbeláez (BIOS/AST) presented a poster regarding: Versatile and modular approach for engineering and analyzing three-dimensional cardiac tissues.

Additionally, Sanne de Wit (L) and Liliana Moreira Teixeira (R), the leads of Organ-on-Chip Centre Twente, were also in attendance!

HDMT

hDMT is a non-profit foundation forming the Dutch consortium on organs-on-chip research and technology, finding its many partners in universities, medical centres and knowledge institutes. Researchers from different disciplines, varying from technology and biology to pharmacologists and clinicians, share their complementary expertise, facilities and ideas as a community. With various theme-groups they address the many challenges in organ-on-chip research, development and translation. In the yearly meeting researchers from all partners come together to present their work and build new collaborations.
