New multifunctional work place for ET

HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS FACULTY ET

ET faculty is working on various housing developments related to the substantial expansion of the faculty. The first major housing project that has now started is the realization of a new multifunctional work place, including an area for practicum work and a large lecture area. In addition, the redesigning of the Horst Ring, the foyer and the canteen of the Horst Complex has started. Various support service departments will be relocated and a new Home base for the students and staff of Engineering Technology will  be realized. A large-scale renovation of the Horst Complex is planned for the longer term (between 2023 and 2025).

NEW INTEGRAL WORK PLACE FOR ET

In 2018, the Hangar was realized as temporary work place behind the Horst Complex, to facilitate the increasing number of ET students. With approval of the Executive Board it was also decided to develop a permanent solution and to realize a multifunctional, integral work place including a large lecture area. This new work place will replace the current works places in the Horst Tower and the West-Horst. An initial sketch design has now been drawn up for this new area, located between the Noord-Horst and Klein-Horst. An integral design team is involved, consisting of VDNDP & CIVIC Architects and Nelissen Ingenieursbureau for the technical installation and building physical design, ET and CFM.
You can view impressions of the sketch design here. This design is only a first interpretation and spatial plan based on the program requirements. It includes a sunken work place floor, which ensures an unobstructed view of the entire area, while the first floor is now at the same level as the ground floors of the surrounding offices. This was an important part of the program requirement.

To find an appropriate name, the ET community will soon be asked to come up with ideas. The best idea will be awarded.

The construction schedule for the new work place is as follows:

  • January 2021: start of preliminary design phase, to be completed in February
  • March 2021: start of the final design phase, to be completed in May
  • June 2021: start of the technical design phase, to be completed in September
  • October-November 2021: tender for an integral construction team
  • January 2022: start of construction of the integral work place
  • December 2022: completion of the work place (if everything goes according to plan)

HOUSING NEEDS INVENTORIED AND HOUSING PLAN FOR ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Based on the expansion of the faculty, the ET strategy and corona developments, a housing plan will be drawn up together with construction management agency Kleissen. With this housing plan ET wants to use of the current accommodation and any future locations elsewhere on campus effectively and future-proof. To make an inventory of the housing needs, Kleissen will take interviews in February with the Faculty Board, the department boards, the support service departments and Campus and Facility Management.

A HOME BASE FOR ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY AND REDESIGNING HORST RING

Given the expansion of ET, more and improved study and workplaces are needed within the Horst. Students and employees of ET have indicated a need for a more spacious and inspiring environment to study, work and meet each other. Students need additional and more variety of flexible learning spaces which match with the small-scale nature of ET education and facilitate working in multidisciplinary teams.
Furthermore, ET aims to strengthen the ET community feeling and to present the faculty's entrance I a more attractive way. Therefore, a Homebase for ET, more unity in interior and a more attractive design of the entrance and canteen will be realized.
In several workshops all wishes regarding ET's Homebase are inventoried and based on the outcomes, Mourik architects will make a design that includes various seating areas in Oost-Horst and Noord-Horst, which, in addition to studying and working, will also offer opportunities to meet each other. Together with furniture supplier Gispen, unity in the furniture will be ensured and additional study workplaces will be created with both existing and new furniture.

Separate meeting places and seats will also be created for employees. The first orders and modifications to the Horstring are expected in February. After that, the redesign of the entrance and canteen will start.
