Fluid Mechanics of Turbomachines

Fluid Mechanics of Turbomachines

Background

Within the Turbomachines research theme, flow phenomena in turbomachines are investigated. An improved, qualitative, and quantitative, understanding of the flow phenomena is essential for further improving the performance of turbomachines. Such improvements, particularly in efficiency, are stimulated by EU-regulations and market demands.

Different types of turbomachines are considered, mainly:

  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Fans
  • Gas turbines
  • Steam turbines
  • Hydraulic turbines

Research Topics

Specific research topics are:

  • Inverse-design methods
  • CFD-based design methods
  • CFD-based optimization methods
  • Experimental validation of CFD methods
  • Fish-safety of centrifugal pumps
  • Fish-safety of hydraulic turbines
  • Cavitation
  • Sediment erosion of centrifugal pump impellers
  • Design methods for reversible pump-turbines
  • Design methods for axial fans

Collaboration

Collaboration is organized within the Turbovalley consortium.
