The laser assisted fiber placement (LAFP) process offers several advantages, automated production, near-net shape production of variable lay-ups, a flexible machine setup and the possibility of in-situ consolidation. With in-situ consolidation it is possible to produce large parts without a time consuming and expensive autoclave consolidation part. This will reduce the costs of parts made by LAFP process and therefore it will be more suitable to be used in series production.


Many attempts are made to use the LAFP process for in-situ consolidation. However the knowledge on the different mechanism taking place during this high-speed process is still limited and as a consequence the process speed is low to obtain reasonable product quality. To increase the process speed and increase the product quality a good understanding of the different mechanisms taking place during the process is needed. With a proper understanding of the process, the product quality can be predicted based on material properties and process parameters. This knowledge can be used to optimise the process, to increase the process speed for high quality products.


The objective of the project is to improve the understanding of the laser assisted fiber placement process. For this purpose a modelling strategy should be developed to relate process parameters to the product quality. The focus during this research will be on in-situ consolidation. The knowledge that is gained during the project will also be used to define a processing window and to provide guidelines to improve the fiber placement robot.
