To decrease the CO2-emmisions in steel manufacturing and drastically reduce the required amount of iron ore, it would be good to re-use more scrap in the production process. However, this is a complex task, as the composition of scrap changes. This leads to variations in the mechanical properties of the steel, thereby introducing problems in the manufacturing of steel components.
The DEPMAT-programme develops new material models to predict how the composition of the raw material and parameters of the production process will influence the properties of produced steel. In this way, it is possible to utilize more scrap while a constant quality of the steel is guaranteed.
