The post-Master’s Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programmes at the University of Twente are part of the Twente Graduate School (TGS) and the 4TU Stan Ackermans Institute (SAI). TGS is the University unit that registers doctoral students and EngD trainees. Its mission is to train and educate excellent researchers and designers, usually at the onset of their career, and to present and promote excellent research and design through clustered or distinct professional doctoral programmes. The four leading universities of technology in the Netherlands – Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University – have joined forces in the 4TU. The Stan Ackermans Institute is a joint initiative of this 4TU federation. The 4TU federation maximises innovation by combining and concentrating the strengths of all four universities in research, education and knowledge transfer.
Overview
The Civil Engineering EngD programme is a two-year post-MSc programme with a total study value of 120 EC that consists of three components: professional development (6 to 10 EC), deepening and broadening courses (≥ 45 EC) and a design project (≥ 60 EC). These parts form a structurally coherent programme. The programme’s compulsory courses provide the overall basic design competences (knowledge, skills and attitudes) that each PDEng trainee should acquire, while the specialisation courses and elective courses allow trainees to broaden and deepen their knowledge and skills in a specific direction as further preparation for the design project and their future career. During the design project, the trainee transfers scientific knowledge into industry or society.
Admission
To be considered for the Civil Engineering EngD programme, an interested graduate should hold an MSc degree in the field of civil engineering or a related discipline (Dutch or foreign) with an emphasis on the technological design project they are applying for. Candidates will be assessed based on the following selection criteria:
- Curriculum vitae, with special attention to:
- Results obtained in their MSc programme (diplomas will be validated by UT);
- Other diplomas and additional courses;
- Length and type of work experience (if applicable).
- Motivation, with a focus on demonstrable affinity with design and multidisciplinary assignments;
- Professional skills, such as English-language skills, communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork, initiative and self-reflection;
