CEM team at the Batavierenrace! 175 km running together from nijmegen to Enschede

CEM team participated in Batavierenrace

Last weekend a joint CEM team participated in the Batavierenrace (Bata). The 175 km long relay race that consists of 25 stages was a great social activity for some integration between the research groups. The department managed to assemble a diverse group of runners. Some of whom with marathon experience under their belt. Others participated virtually untrained. Both early career researchers, as well as senior staff joined. All three research groups – construction management, water, and transport – were represented.

On Friday evening the race started in the city center of Nijmegen, heading for the Radboud Sports Center where the other night shift runners were supporting. From there, Rens van der Meijden took off in the direction of Enschede setting the 11th fastest time of the stage. The rest of the team on the night shift steadily carried runners vest 69 to Ulft, where the morning shift runners took over. Despite initially driving to the wrong switching point, the morning group managed to waste no time, continuing their journey to Barchem where the afternoon shift started. In the afternoon shift Wilco Tijhuis fulfilled the responsibility of running the longest stage of the Bata.

On Saturday afternoon Kathelijne Wijnberg & Karst Geurs had the honor of running the two final legs. The mass restarts took place at the Van Heekpark this year. Finishing in front of the crowd at the UTrack, they made the department proud. In the end, CEM finished right in the middle, at place 176 out of 350. After the finish, the staff team joined study association ConcepT for a well-deserved barbecue. With the remaining energy, a number of team members made their way to the bata party to celebrate their achievements.
