Introduction:

This assignment is in collaboration with the department of Applied Stem Cell Technologies (AST) and the group of BIOS Lab on a Chip, who are working on the development of a most representative model of the human heart, and the DMB group.

AST and BIOS are working on a platform allowing for engineering heart tissues (EHT, see picture above). This platform combines biology, microfabrication technics and image processing to analyze the contraction of the EHT.

A method has been developed to identify the displacement of the tissues that is, later on, converted to force. This method automatically goes through the stack of folders with the recordings of the EHTs and gives as a result 3 graphs (displacement, force of contraction and upstroke speed) and an excel file with all the data for further analysis.

The platform, in which the image analysis and processing of the data are crucial components, will be upgraded by introducing machine learning to speed up and improve the analysis. We are looking for an enthusiastic CS or EE student that can help us out with this, who will be jointly supervised by researchers from AST, BIOS, and DMB.
