Currently, the University of Twente (UT) offers the wireless network 'UThings' for connecting 'Smart Devices' and 'Internet of Things' (IoT) devices that cannot log in to the Eduroam wireless network. Registrations for UThings must be requested via the Servicedesk ICT, after which they are manually processed by the network team.
Surf has developed a service that provides the same functionality as UThings but with significant advantages:
- Device registrations can be created and managed by individuals with a valid UT account themselves.
- Devices can also connect to the iotroam network at other institutions that offer the iotroam network.
Therefore, the UT has decided to replace the UThings network with iotroam. The replacement timeline is as follows:
- On Monday, February 3rd, 2025, the iotroam wireless network will become active. Anyone with a valid UT account (student, staff, or affiliate) can register up to three personal IoT devices for iotroam at https://iotroam.nl from that date.
- During the period until the end of August 2025, the LISA Network Management Team will contact current UThings users and groups with multiple devices registered to assist them with the migration. Individuals with a few devices will receive information on how to complete the transition themselves.
- On Monday, September 1, 2025, the UThings wireless network will be deactivated.
Good to know: Devices connected to Eduroam and iotroam can reach each other in the network as long as both accounts have been registered with the same e-mail address.
This excludes broadcast and multicast traffic (such as mDNS), meaning not all media applications will always work.
