Today is Diversity Day! A day across the Netherlands to reflect on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in society. At UT, we use this moment each year to pause and consider what makes us unique. Our differences are a source of inspiration, creativity, and learning. Sometimes this brings discomfort or tension, but that is precisely where the opportunity lies to understand each other better and to find common ground. It is in these encounters that we discover the power of inclusion.
This year’s theme, Connecting Beyond Differences, comes at a time when connection is under pressure. Divisions are hardening, polarisation is increasing, and respect for differences can seem to be fading. That is why it is more important than ever to stand firm for an inclusive university where everyone feels respected, heard, seen, and valued. Today, we make a clear call to action to continue seeking dialogue, empathy and connection with your peers, colleagues, fellow students and society at large.
In this message, you’ll find inspiration on how you can take further action and ownership – by joining activities, sharing your ideas, and reflecting today and in the weeks ahead.

Climate Just Future Symposium and Sustainability Week – The power of collective action
Sustainability Week 2025 takes place from 06-10 October and is a series of fun and interesting events, designed to inspire, and engage participants to join the sustainability movement. This year’s theme is on the power of collective action. This year, together with DE&I, we dive into the many faces of sustainability exploring how diverse perspectives and innovative solutions can drive real, impactful change. From climate justice to circular economies, social equity to green tech, we’re showcasing the power of collective action.
SIGN UP for the Symposium on Wednesday 08 October where we explore new ideas for a fairer and greener future. This one-day event is open to everyone and we’ll explore why gender equity is key in the fight against climate change. The event brings together students, employees, activists, experts and anyone interested, to learn, share, and take action.
Accessibility Week 2025
From 06–12 October, Accessibility Week highlights the importance of equal access — being able to go anywhere, feel welcome, and easily find (digital) information. At UT, we kicked off by joining the national “Most Accessible Week Start,” organised by VWS and partners.
We further continue our commitment to the UN Declaration Accessible Education for Everyone, strengthening policy and practice together with students and colleagues. This year the Municipality of Enschede is organising an inspiring afternoon filled with activities (in Dutch).

Become a UT DE&I Dilemma game trainer!
Over the past few months, a UT DE&I Dilemma Game has been developed. A discussion-based tool built around real-life scenarios and experiences from our university community. Through guided reflection and dialogue, the game helps participants explore how to navigate complex situations related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social safety. Would you like to help facilitate these important conversations in different teams at UT?
Join our Train-the-Trainer session to learn how to use the game effectively and create meaningful dialogue. Sign up now for our first train the trainer session on 30 October from 13:00-14:30 and join our journey to a more inclusive UT!
New DE&I Development Framework 2025-2030
Did you know UT has a new DE&I Development Framework for the next 5 years, with a strategic focus that calls for systemic thinking, consistent leadership, and the integration of DE&I principles into every part of our institution: our education, our research, our employees, our students, and our organisational structures. Social safety forms the foundation for this strategy, ensuring that our campus remains a place where everyone can learn, work, feel respected and welcome without barriers.
Find out what you can do and lets talk about it!
