Heart-warming support for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria

It has been just over a month since the disaster struck Turkey and Syria, with a devastating earthquake causing a catastrophe of immense proportions in southern Turkey and northern Syria. For some, this terrible disaster has fallen somewhat out of sight as it no longer dominates daily news reports in the media. For others, it is still highly topical because they face the consequences every day again.

Many UT employees and students have been affected in one way or another by the consequences of this disaster. They have lost friends or family, or are seriously worried about how things will proceed now and reconstruction may take a long time.

Within our UT community, we have seen many heart-warming actions meant to provide help. Several actions emerged, including a stand at the O&O square by staff and students selling treats to raise funds. Wherever possible, we supported such actions as a university to the best of our ability.

Together, we form a diverse and international community. Events like disasters and conflicts elsewhere in the world do not leave us unmoved, as they also impact our staff, students, alumni and partners with whom we work internationally. What may seem far away to some, sometimes is closer than they think.

Ask for help

At UT, we want to be there for our staff and students should they be affected by any situation anywhere in the world. We can only do that if we know what they are up against. Sometimes these are practical issues, but sometimes complex psychological complaints arise. You may also get in touch if it is not specifically work- or study-related.

There is no one standard solution to all situations. Every time, it is tailor-made to see what is needed. We ask our managers and study advisers to lend an ear and think along with staff and students in finding solutions. UT cannot always provide these solutions, but we can help find solutions, and may also provide access to further help and support.

Are you getting stuck? Please, talk about it or ask for help. Only then, can we work with you to see how best to help you.
