Embassy of Health

World Design Embassies - Embassy of Health

Full story

The World Design Embassies is a programme of Dutch Design Foundation. Founded to discuss today's social challenges with alliances of partners. Together with designers, the eight embassies work on solutions and develop new perspectives for the world of tomorrow. Three embassies (with Embassy of Health being one of them) will tell their story at Dutch Design Week this year, together with DDW21 ambassador Floris Alkemade (chief government architect, the Dutch Council of Public Health & Society).

Chronic Health - vital changes for a caring society | Embassy of Health
The awareness is growing on the fact that our health is dependent on more aspects than where our current healthcare system has an influence on. Because our quality of health is not only determined by the quality of medical care. It is also determined by the quality of our social contacts, the environment where we live and work, and the quality of new technologies. Read more

The expo at DDW showcases a selection of 12 design trajectories, in which we see the position of ‘unusual suspects’ take a new role in the care landscape of the future: care professionals, but also patients, neighbours, students, local makers and artists; housing corporations, supermarkets and tech companies.

Exhibition at Ketelhuisplein | 16-24 Oct

ExperiVan (BMS Lab)

The BMS Lab possesses mobile lab facilities in addition to its main lab facilities. At times normal lab facilities do not fit the research question or population. Participants might not be able or willing to go to a university or a researcher might want to study in a more naturalistic setting. The Experivan – the BMS Lab’s mobile lab facilities – offers a versatile platform to conduct research on the road. Continue reading to learn more.

A Versatile mobile lab space

The Experivan Mobile lab is a converted Mercedes Benz sprinter van. The back of the van has been converted to accommodate research of all types in various locations and with differing needs. It can thus serve as not just a storage space for lab equipment but is able to serve as lab space and base of operations while on the road.

Our ExperiVan brings research innovations in healthcare to the citizens themselves.

Dr ir Jan-Willem Van t Kloster

“Recently, Citizen Science or citizen science has been on the rise in healthcare,” says Van't Klooster. “This involves end users throughout the development and research process. The mobile lab is ideally suited for this.” For example, the ExperiVan has already been deployed on market squares and in front of institutions to test the use of the CoronaMelder app.

During the Dutch Design Week, the ExperiVan will be on Ketelhuisplein as part of the Chronic Health: Vital Changes for a Caring Society exhibition. Visitors are welcome to take a look and participate in the research.

Exhibition at Klokgebouw | 16-24 OCT

Good health depends on many factors. Our health is not only determined by the quality of medical care and technological developments, but also by our lifestyle, the quality of our social contacts and our living and working environment.

This exhibition shows that the transition to 'chronic health' is a matter of new coalitions working together. And that designers can be the catalyst for this. The exhibition at Klokgebouw shows some inspiring examples of such unexpected collaborations and their results. You can find the Chronic Health Manifesto, as well as the results of the Philips Experience Design workshop - a DreamTeam collaboration with Frank Kolkman and ArtEZ Arnhem.

Conference at Klokgebouw (Entresol)
22 Oct | 14:00-16:00

Frank Kolkman (speculative designer), Sabine Wildevuur (director DesignLab University of Twente) and Marleen Stikker (director Waag) explore the role of artificial intelligence. How do we relate to AI? And how do we design a desired future with AI as a stakeholder in this future?

During the conference, a manifesto for 'chronic health' will also be presented. Unfortunately, registration is already full!
