UT @Dutch Design Week: Co-Shaping the future we all want to live in!

Every year in October, Dutch Design Week (DDW) takes place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. DDW is the biggest design event in Northern Europe, where thousands of designers from all over the globe present their work and ideas. Last year, the programmes were organised a little bit differently due to COVID-19 regulations. But this year, the organisation is going full-force: a hybrid (meaning both a physical and online) event, from the 16th until the 24th of October. And University of Twente will take part in three programmes: Up Close & Personal by Design United, Embassy of Health and the DRIVE festival.

DDW21 theme: The Greater Number

Every programme has its own themes and its own manner of showcasing, but they all connect to this year's overarching theme: 'The Greater Number'; the quest for the better number. With this theme, DDW on the one hand calls for less. Less consumption, less production, and therefore less waste. On the other hand, we know less isn't always possible and that when it comes to more, it should be better. In other words, more sustainable products with more value, so that consumers deal with products differently. The theme is about striving to change the behaviour of consumers and manufacturers. By looking for renewed value between consumer and product, we can move towards changes in design practices. Related themes are:

Connecting worlds for a better future

Researchers and students from various study programmes and faculties at University of Twente showcase Design Research projects that represent ways to co-create the future that we, as a society, want to live in. Proving to work with UT's mission in mind (People-first University of Technology), they have been welcomed to join at least three programmes at DDW.

Thanks to this opportunity, the UT community of creative (design) engineers and researchers, passionate health care specialists, ambitious student teams and curious behavioural scientists (in training) will present their outcomes, scenarios and wishes for the future, to hundreds of thousands of visitors from all across Europe.

Behind the scenes, we have exchanged innovative concepts and combined our forces with those of our external partners Embassy of Health, the four Dutch technical universities (4TU's Design United) and ClickNL (Top Consortium of the top sector Creative Industries), getting ready to tackle challenges that may seem impossible at first.

More than ever, it is important to work together as a society, in order to come up with workable solutions for today's AND tomorrow's issues. Do you think it is time too and would you like to participate in and experience citizen science, #chronichealth, and solutions thanks to (unexpected) encounters? Come and visit us online or in Eindhoven at Up Close & Personal, Embassy of Health and DRIVE Festival!
