Surely you’re familiar with LEGO. And chances are you’ve played Mario games as well. But what happens when you combine the two? Join our free lunch lecture to find out about this unique new hybrid play experience and how it came to life. Jonathan Bennink, lead designer on LEGO side and UT alumnus will tell you all about the inspiring journey from idea to reality.
Resilience, creativity, collaboration
Seven years ago, Bennink conceived the idea of combining game mechanics and traditional LEGO play. Convinced of the potential of his idea, he took a year off to dedicate himself to further developing it. After presenting his work to the LEGO company, he was soon invited to join the team. And this led up to becoming the lead designer on LEGO side for the new collaboration with Nintendo. Coming August, after four years of development, LEGO Super Mario will finally be in stores.
The play experience keeps children active in a hybrid between the digital and physical world. Also, it promotes cognitive, social and creative development. As such, it is a good example of Responsible Design, something that is also key to the DesignLab philosophy.
